Wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham is a star studded player who has immense talent, and has the chance to be a top draft pick once he becomes elligible. Unfortunately for Green-Beckham, he will have to overcome the fact that he was just dismissed from the Missouri Tigers football team following allegations that were released on his involvement in a burglary.
Following this recent dismissal, Green-Beckham will have to quickly find a team who is willing to take a chance on a troubled player, for at least one more season. It's highly unlikely that he would remain in college beyond this season, as he will be entering his junior year, and be elligible to declare for the 2015 NFL Draft.
So what's next for the troubled wide receiver as he looks to remain on draft radars a year from now, despite the fact that he is currently not playing for a team?
NFL Supplemental Draft?
For those wondering, this possibility is all but out of the question. There have been times before where a troubled player was suddenly dismissed from his team prior to the start of the collegiate season, only for it to be too late for him to declare for the draft. You might remember more recent supplemental draft picks like Jared Gaither, Terrelle Pryor and Josh Gordon, who were all taken in the supplemental draft after being dissmissed from their respective teams.
While the NFL supplemental draft kind of looks like a way for troubled players to get bailed out of a tough situation, it still requires it's players to have spent at least three years in college. With Green-Beckham only having two years under his belt, he will have to wait it out one more season before entering the draft, similar to what LSU's Tyrann Mathieu had to do in the 2012-2013 season when he was removed from the team.
Find a New Team?
This is obviously the best decision, but Green-Beckham is going to have to convince a coach and university that he's ready to straighten his act out and focus on football. Even if he does find a new school to play for in 2014, it's highly unlikely that it will be a prominent school.
When Cam Newton was dismissed from the Florida Gators following the 2008 season, he transferred to Blinn Community College in Texas before wrapping up his career in 2010 at Auburn. Another player who faced a similar situation was Colts receiver Da'Rick Rogers, who was dismissed from the Tennesse Volunteers and played his final collegiate season with the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles.
It's hard to imagine a team being unwilling to take a chance on a guy like Green-Beckham, who likely would have been one of the best receivers in this year's draft class if he was elligible to enter his name. But he'll be lucky to suit up for a prominent D-I school in 2014.
Train on His Own?
It seems pretty crazy to even think about this, but Tyrann Mathieu proved that a dismissal from a collegiate football team doesn't spell the end for a player if he is unable to catch on with another team.
Mathieu worked to turn his life around, and trained vigorously for the 2013 NFL Draft. The result? Mathieu was drafted in the third round by the Arizona Cardinals, moved to free safety, and excelled in his rookie year. He finished his rookie campaign with 68 tackles, a forced fumble and two interceptions, before tearing his ACL and MCL in early December, ending his season.
Missing a full year of football certainly hurt Mathieu's draft stock, as he likely would have been a first or second round pick had he been on the field in the 2012-2013 season, but the fact that he only fell to the third round is pretty impressive. Additionally, Mathieu was also pretty undersized as a cornerback, while Green-Beckham possesses great size and strength for a wide receiver, something that could keep his stock relatively high.
There's no telling what will happen with Green-Beckham at this point. He will have to take time to evaluate where he wants to go from here, and teams will have to decide whether or not he's worth the risk to come play for their college for a season. That being said, his pro football future certainly looks to be going down the drains for now, but don't be surprised if he's a heavily talked about prospect when the 2015 NFL Draft rolls around.
