Which Rookie Quarterback Will Have a Better Season?
At the end of week 4 the big 3 of rookie quarterbacks will all have a start at quarterback for their respective teams. The big 3 consists of Oakland Raiders’ Derek Carr, Minnesota Vikings’ Teddy Bridgewater and Jacksonville Jaguars’ Blake Bortles. Those three quarterbacks are the starters from here on out. All three teams hope their quarterbacks can lead them back to the playoffs. They know the playoffs probably won't happen this year, but maybe next year, as they always say.
Derek Carr might be in the toughest spot. The Oakland Raiders have been struggling for the last couple of years. Derek Carr was named the starter week 1. Through 4 games, Carr has 734 yards with 4 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. This week versus the Miami Dolphins, Derek Carr left the game; according to reports he has an MCL sprain. So, he could be out for a while, if not all year. The Vikings and Jaguars wanted to keep their quarterbacks on the bench all year so they could learn, but Vikings quarterback Matt Cassel got hurt (placed on season ending IR) and Jaguars quarterback Chad Henne got benched. The Jaguars had no choice but to bring in Bortles since Henne didn't give them a good shot at winning.
Last week Bridgewater came in in the middle of the game and had 150 passing yards and 27 rushing yards. Bortles played in half of a game last week as well and threw for 223 yards with 2 interceptions and 2 touchdowns. In Bortles’s first career start this week versus the San Diego Chargers, he threw for 253 yards, 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. In Bridgewater's first career start versus the Atlanta Falcons he threw for 317 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. He also ran the ball 5 times for 27 yards and a rushing touchdown.
I think Bridgewater and Bortles will both play well this year and both will be good down the road for their career, but if I have to pick one quarterback to have for the rest of the season I would pick Bridgewater. I like that Bridgewater has a better offensive line than what Bortles has with Jacksonville. The Vikings’ run game has also looked good so far even without suspended running back, Adrian Peterson. Bridgewater can also make plays happen with his legs if he needs too. The Vikings also have a star playmaker in Cordarrelle Patterson. Bridgewater also almost threw for 4,000 yards each of his last two seasons in college. Look for Bridgewater to keep having a good year.
