College Football Bowls: 5 Sure-Fire Shootouts

The best thing about the college bowl season is some intriguing matchups that may prove to be some of the best we have seen in some time. Thank the College Football Playoff format for that.

Teams with high-powered offenses facing each other with the thought that defenses will be running all over the field will make fans of the team and the game very happy.

Here are the five games that could light up scoreboards and prove to be the most intriguing if you love plenty of offense.

Hyundai Sun Bowl - (15) Arizona State vs. Duke

Last season in the Peach Bowl, Duke matched scoring with Texas A&M before falling to Johnny Manziel in his final college game. The Sun Devils are not the Aggies and there is no Manziel on the field this season.

Expect there to be plenty of scoring to go around in the desert for this one where the last team with the ball could break a tie for the victory.

Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl - (9) Ole Miss vs. (6) TCU

Gary Patterson gives his Horned Frogs the chance to prove they are better than the SEC opponent. As with the game against Baylor, TCU will march up and down the field if need be to outscore their opponents.

The Rebels are familiar with these kinds of tough games, playing in the dominant SEC. The defense must stop TCU, and will have their hands full with the offense. Can Bo Wallace and his arsenal match their opponent touchdown for touchdown all game long?

Capital One Orange Bowl - (7) Mississippi St. vs. (12) Georgia Tech

The Yellow Jackets proved they could stay in the game with Florida State with their triple-option threat. The Yellow Jackets defense is pretty good as well.

This is the game where Dak Prescott must show the scouts he is still the quarterback who can light up a scoreboard and remain a game manager. The Bulldogs have a solid defense and better skill players than they are given credit for.

Rose Bowl Game - (2) Oregon vs. (3) Florida State

Obviously, this is the contest most think could be the highest scoring game of the bowl season. The past two Heisman wins facing each other and superb weapons at Marcus Mariota’s and Jameis Winston’s disposal.

While the Rose Bowl has been called a home field advantage for the Ducks, but the last time I checked, FSU won a national title in Los Angeles earlier this year.

Vizio Fiesta Bowl - (20) Boise State vs. (10) Arizona

We know the game against Oregon is not a representation of what the Wildcats can do on offense. Look for them to try and erase the memory of the Ducks defense shutting them down. I expect Rich Rodriguez to put the foot on the throttle on New Year’s Eve.

Boise State in its first season without Chris Petersen played better than I thought they would and have shown they can still light up a scoreboard.

This is one of those games that could turn into a track meet very early.
