Johnny Starter for the Cleveland Browns?
Johnny Manziel was drafted by the Cleveland Browns with the 22nd overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. Manziel was set to compete with Brian Hoyer for the starting quarterback job this summer. After three preseason game, Hoyer, the safe choice for first year head coach Mike Pettine, was named the starter. Still, many believed Manziel would be starting for the Browns after their Week 4 bye.
But after 12 games, Hoyer has led the Browns to a 7-5 record with a chance at a playoff bid. But, it could all change heading into Week 14.
Hoyer was benched in favor of Manziel in the fourth quarter of the Browns game against the Bills on Sunday. Manziel’s first drive resulted in a 10 yard TD run for Johnny Football as he scored his first NFL touchdown and gave the Browns a chance to win the game down the stretch. They eventually lost 26-10. But it was clear that Manziel provided a much needed spark for the Browns offense that was sputtering all day. With questions looming, will the Browns finally turn to Johnny Manziel to lead them on their final playoff surge?
Those in favor of Brian Hoyer argue that he has led the Browns this far and should get a fair shot at a playoff push. Many argue that without Hoyer, the Browns would not be 7-5 and just one game back in the AFC North. But it has been evident that Hoyer is extremely inconsistent and can be turnover prone. If Hoyer gets another shot at being the starting quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, he almost certainly has to lead them to the playoffs in order to earn a new contract next season with the Browns.
The obvious choice going forward for the Browns is Manziel. This is a perfect time to develop their franchise quarterback in meaningful moments. With Josh Gordon’s recent return and the imminent return of TE Jordan Cameron, the Browns are locked and loaded with offensive weapons. Manziel brings another dimension to the quarterback position as he is a dual threat player. He will likely open lanes for the committee of running backs led by Isaiah Crowell. If Manziel can harness the pride he plays with and can avoid some of the rookie bumps in the road, Johnny Football can get the Browns to the playoffs.
Going forward, Johnny Manziel should be the man in Cleveland.
