New York Giants: It's Now or Never for Adrien Robinson
When you look at Adrien Robinson, his 6’4/265 frame really stands out at the TE position. When you watch Adrien Robinson on the field, his athleticism really stands out. So why has this 4th round selection in the 2012 draft still not the starting TE for the Giants? Well, injuries have played a major part in that scenario (foot and knee), however; this season could very well be Robinson’s last chance. The Giants have not had a serious threat at the TE position since Martellus Bennett (55 reps/626 yards/5 TDS) in 2012. Gone are the days of Mark Bavaro, Jeremy Shockey, even Kevin Boss and Jake Ballard. Currently Larry Donnell seems to be penciled in as the starting TE heading into the 2015 season with Daniel Fells, Jerome Cunningham, Matt LaCosse and Will Tye all competing for a roster spot.
When you look at the Giants TE depth, Robinson should have some concerns with the arrival of La Cosse and Tye. Both are extremely athletic and mobile, and can both contribute on special teams. GM Jerry Reese has had many chances to add a TE to the Giants roster (Eric Ebron, Jace Amaro, Austin Seferian-Jenkins,Maxx Williams,Clive Walford) via the draft over the last couple of years. With the addition of Offensive Coordinator Ben McAdoo in 2014, it was envisioned that Robinson’s career and opportunity could blossom similar to Jermichael Finley’s in Green Bay.
How much longer can the Giants wait for Robinson? Should GM Jerry Reese finally admit that his statement that Robinson is the next JPP was a bit of a reach? The Giants have been waiting for Robinson for 3 seasons now and by all appearances; his 4th season could be his make or break season with the Giants.
So can Adrien Robinson finally stay healthy enough to show the Giants that he can be their TE of the future? All the physical tools are already in place and certainly the opportunity awaits him. Still only 26 years old, there’s still time for Robinson to showcase his ability. However; that window is slowly closing and the question is: will he be able to put it all together with the Giants?
