F1: Ferrari expects Alonso to stay

di Montezemolo Alonso F1 2013Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo insists he has no worries about Fernando Alonso's long-term commitment to Ferrari despite an ongoing push by McLaren to lure him away.
Alonso's future became the subject of speculation during the summer when he was given a public dressing down by di Montezemolo over comments he had made.
It also emerged that the Spaniard's management team sounded out both Red Bull and Lotus about their future driver situation, while McLaren is eyeing taking Alonso back as soon as 2015.
But di Montezemolo says relations with Alonso are much improved now, and that he has no worries about him leaving before his current contract runs out at the end of 2016.
"This [the speculation about Alonso's future] is something good for the press, sometimes good for the public," said di Montezemolo.
"I am very pleased with Fernando. He has a contract with us until the end of 2016.
"My only concern is to give him a better car.
"I have a lot of problems but the number one driver is not a problem. We will talk in two years time."
Can Ferrari hold on to Alonso?
Di Montezemolo accepts that Alonso was frustrated about Ferrari's lack of progress this year, but has reiterated that now is the time for his lead driver to work even harder with the team to turn the situation around.
"I understand, I share, I told Fernando that he arrived second this year, thanks to his capability rather than thanks to the car," he said.
"On the other hand I want a driver that even in the difficult moments he gives outside and inside stays very, very close to the team.
"This is the effort that I asked of him in the middle of the season. But I am very happy to have him on the team."

F1: Hamilton: New rules can topple Red Bull

Sergio Perez
Lewis Hamilton believes Formula 1's new regulations provide the best opportunity to end Red Bull's run of success.
Sebastian Vettel thinks the big teams will still come out on top when the new engine and aero regulations come in, but Hamilton is hopeful the changes give teams like his Mercedes squad an opportunity to topple the Red Bull driver.
"If it was evolution of this year's car then it would be very hard to beat the Red Bulls as they are so far ahead," said the 2008 world champion.
"I am happy that it is all resetting again otherwise it would be five, six, seven world championships [to Red Bull]."
Hamilton is also not concerned that the changes, which are likely to put a premium on fuel-saving, will make the driver's job more difficult.
"I'm not worried about it because I was doing the same thing this year," he added. "It is going to be very similar next year and you are still going to have to look after tyres.
"Maybe there will be more fuel saving, but that's stuff we do anyway. We will experience things on the simulator and there will new things we have to adapt to."
Hamilton pointed to the big change in F1's rules for 2009 as an example of how quickly teams and drivers can get on top of new ways of working.
"The change with KERS and everything was really easy," he said. "Again, we did it on the simulator and we [McLaren] arrived at the first race with the best KERS package and we were ahead of people, but the car wasn't good.
"But I'm hoping we have both sides next year."

F1: Lopez: Lotus deserves more respect

Sergio Perez
Lotus team owner Gerard Lopez says his team deserves more respect for its results in Formula 1 this year, while not being fairly treated financially by the sport.
Lotus finished fourth in the constructors' championship this season, but was in the hunt for a top three spot with Mercedes and Ferrari until the final round in Brazil.
There was much speculation over the financial state of the team as lead driver Kimi Raikkonen signed for Ferrari and quit Lotus with two races still to run to have back surgery following a pay dispute with the squad.
Lotus has also been involved in protracted negotiations with the Quantum Motorsport investment group while replacing Raikkonen with Pastor Maldonado who brings substantial backing from the Venezeulan state oil company PDVSA.
Lopex says his team has to seek investment because it does not receive as much money from the sport as the other top teams. He thinks Lotus should receive more respect for achieving what it has done amid financial restraint.
"We were fighting for third place but the reality is that F1 being what it is, we are not being treated that way financially speaking. And what is true for us is true for other teams," Lopez told AUTOSPORT. "We are running the 100 metres, but we actually start at the 200 metre mark.
"We find it a bit disrespectful when people start writing about our woes, or when other people comment on them.
"If I got the same amount of money [as the other top teams] I would just shut my mouth and focus on my job, I wouldn't comment on it. That is the part we find a bit ridiculous.
"I am looking for people to have respect and realise this is not corporate money being spent. We are beating people who have way more money and get way more money. To have a bit of respect is fair - not for us [the owners], [but] certainly for the people at the team.
"We want to live and succeed in F1. If it is just about surviving I don't know if our motivation is the same.
"That is the only reason why we opened up discussions to investors. We know we have probably one of the best teams in F1, and we know for sure we have pound-for-pound the best team in F1.
"We are trying to preserve that."
