Chicago Bears Leadership on the Hot Seat

Brandon Marshall Rant

The Bears lost the Miami Dolphins at Soldier Field, giving the Bears a record of 3 losses at home early in the season. This is a team that should be tied with Green Bay Packers and the Detroit Lions by now. But they are currently swimming in a 3-4 season along with the 2-5 Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North division. What was seen as a promising year for the Bears with a strong offense and a revamped defense, the Chicago Bears have appeared to be disconnected and inexperienced. It starts with the leadership.

Coaching Staff:

Every single loss, Head coach Marc Trestman begins with these words, "This is a tough loss and it starts with me." That is correct Coach Trestman, it starts with you.  It was you who hired Aaron Kromer to lead the offense, Mel Tucker to lead the defense and Joe DeCamillis to lead Special Team. So far DeCamillis has not done anything special as the Bears special teams look like amateurs and the return game is none existent.

As for the defense, DC Mel Tucker has improved the defense in preparing the young players in stopping the pass and run action.  But if we look at the numbers rookie Willie Young has 7 sacks so far this season, followed by Stephen Paea with 4 and Jeremiah Ratliff with 3.5. Stepping up to the plate is rookie CB Kyle Fuller with 25 solo tackles, 8 assists, 3 fumbles and 3 interceptions.  But there still needs to be more practice on the pass rush and pressure to the quarterback, as we have seen little from Lamarr Houston and Jared Allen.

As for the offense, OC Aaron Kromer needs to drill it on ball protection. However, Marc Trestman, aka "The Quarterback Whisperer", needs to speak louder to QB Jay Cutler, who, as of late can't seem to go through a game without throwing a pick or two. With the exception of the game in Atlanta, Cutler is on track to finish his season with 10+ interceptions. Every coach wants to have confidence in his gunner, but until Cutler can meet up to the level of an Aaron Rodgers or a Peyton Manning, Trestman needs to tighten the reins on Cutler's play calling abilities.

The undertone to Marshall's "pep talk" in the locker room and the comments he said to the media, was loud and clear. Play with heart boys. Dig deeper and find the will to win without jeopardizing the play with unnecessary penalties.  In a non-calling-out way, without mentioning his quarterbacks name, Marshall was telling Cutler to run the given play.  This is a team and not a one-man-show.  Just find the OPEN receiver and throw. Ex-Bear Doug Flutie said it best, "nothing has changed in the game. It's still the same. You find the open receiver and you throw."

The Bears play the New England Patriots on the road this week and Vegas Odds has them as the underdog at -6. The Bears could make a statement here and show that they can keep up with the big boys, by playing as one consistent cohesive unit. Going into the bye after that will give them much needed rest but an opportunity to clean up the miscues in all phases and prepare to play the Packers in Lambeau Field. A win there will scream volumes that the Bears are not done yet.

To quote Marshall, "We just need to gel, we need to continue to come together, but the time is now."

Why Gus Bradley is not on the Hot Seat in Jacksonville?

When your head coach is 0-6 for the second time in two years, there should be a cautionary red light that goes off in the franchise’s front office and with the media and fan base.

The red light has been bright in the media and the fan base has more than voiced its opinion – both good and bad in recent weeks, but if you ask Jaguars’ general manager Dave Caldwell about the team and job being done to promote a winner, he will tell you the job coach Gus Bradley is doing is right in line with what he expected this season.

“Yes, absolutely I do,” Caldwell told the Florida Times-Union Wednesday morning at EverBank Field. “I think our coaching staff is doing a great job of developing our young players, I think our young players are doing a great job of accepting the coaching and we’ve got veterans like Paul Posluszny, Sen’Derrick Marks, Roy Miller and Alan Ball doing some things.

“We’re close to being where we thought we would be."

Not even a little bit behind considering the free agent additions (left guard Zane Beadles and defensive ends Chris Clemons and Red Bryant) and another draft class (headlined by quarterback Blake Bortles)? The Jaguars didn’t envision losing by four games by at least 17 points, right?

“Obviously if you win a game or two, you would feel better about it,” Caldwell said. “But I felt going into this year, [the first half] would be a lot like last year but we would be more competitive in those games — and we’ve done that in four of the six games — and then we would have a better second half of the season. So far, that’s held true. Now we just have to learn how to close those games out.”

Gus Bradley is the kind of coach everyone wants to play for. That is one of the reasons players who were released from the Seattle Seahawks, his old stomping ground where he served as defensive coordinator, wanted to come across the country to play in north Florida.

The schedule the Jaguars have is not the easiest of schedules and admittedly, they may have allowed the last two games – Pittsburgh and Tennessee – slip away from them. The running game is nonexistent, the offensive line still gelling and the receiving unit just recovering from injuries. Even in the two losses by a total of 10 points, there are signs of life in this roster.

The Times-Union article touched on several issues that make this staff and team one that can still be effective this season.

  • Caldwell said owner Shad Khan remains “incredibly supportive” with the plan put in place to build the Jaguars. The two usually talk on Fridays and Mondays and exchange text messages throughout the week.
  • Caldwell said he called Khan in the lead-up to the Week 3 game against Indianapolis about the team’s plan to possibly play Bortles if Chad Henne continued to struggle (Bortles entered at halftime). “I try to inform him of the big stuff as much as I can,” Caldwell said.
  • Count Caldwell among the rest of the organization and Jaguars fans who have been encouraged with Bortles through one mop-up game and three starts. “The thing that has impressed me the most that I wasn’t 100 percent sure about was his athleticism and his ability to avoid the rush, get out of the pocket and make the off-schedule play,” Caldwell said. “I think he ran a [4.93-second 40-yard dash] at the Combine but you see him on the field, he probably moves a lot better than that.”
  • The Jaguars don’t regret their decision to have Bortles watch the first 2 1/2 games. “I had a feeling it might work out this way,” Caldwell said. “But I think he needed those first couple weeks to collect his thoughts. I thought it was important for him to settle down and work on some of the things he needed to work on mechanically. “He’s just finding his way and hopefully he continues to improve.”
  • Bortles has seven interceptions but is completing 67.8 percent of his passes. Do the offensive players around him need to step up their games? “What I’m seeing, they’re starting to,” Caldwell said. “Unfortunately, [right guard] Brandon Linder and [receiver] Allen Robinson didn’t get a chance to sit [like Bortles] but they’ve learned as they went along and you’ve seen continued improvement from those guys and guys like [left tackle] Luke Joeckel in his second year and Zane Beadles has started to play better the last three games. “We knew it would be a little of learn-as-you-go and a little bit of a developmental process on offense throughout the season.”
  • The Jaguars’ running game appears broken (last in yards per game at 69.5 and sixth-worst with a 3.5-yard average per carry). But Caldwell and the coaching staff have seen glimmers of hope recently.

The next two games are “gettable” for this team, but a win or two will not erase the issues that are still present. That’s fine with Caldwell. As long as the team and Bradley follow the blueprint Caldwell has orchestrated things will be fine. It may take another season, but progress is on its way.

Al Golden Could Be On The Hot Seat With A Loss To Georgia Tech

Historically speaking, the University of Miami (Fl) has always prided itself with having its football team being a National Championship contender, or at the very least, involved in such discussions.  In most respects, a three loss season is considered a success, but in Miami, anything short of appearing in one of the four major bowl games is considered unacceptable.

Larry Coker led the Miami Hurricanes to a National Championship during his debut season as the team's head coach in 2001, taking over for  Butch Davis, who accepted a head coaching job with the Cleveland Browns prior to the season.

Coker led the Hurricanes back to the National Championship game during his sophomore season, in a losing effort against the Ohio State Buckeyes.  In 2003, the Hurricanes finished 11-2, but they did win the Big East Championship outright.

Miami would finish both 2004 and 2005 9-3, failing to finish within the top 10 final rankings.  Coker was on the hot seat entering the 2006 season, with anything short of a National Championship appearance being considered grounds for termination.  The Hurricanes finished the regular season 6-6, resulting in Coker's termination.

Randy Shanahan had the difficult responsibility of replacing Coker, while also dealing with the Nevin Shapiro scandal that proceeded the 2011 season.  Unfortunately, Shanahan's first season as head coach was a bust.  The Hurricanes lost six of their final seven games, and failed to qualify for a bowl game for the first time on over a decade.  Miami finished 7-6 in 2008, improved to 9-4 in 2009, before falling back to 7-6 in 2010.   Shanahan was fired following the Hurricanes' loss to South Florida to end the 2010 season.

Al Golden was hired as head coach for the 2011 season due to his success at Temple University.  During Golden's first two seasons as head coach, the Hurricanes finished 6-6 and 7-5.  Last season the Hurricanes improved to 9-4.

Golden and the Hurricanes both entered this season understanding the higher expectations in place, but with losses already to Louisville and Nebraska, the odds of Miami finishing this season in the top 25 have been diminished.

A loss to Georgia Tech this Saturday would put the Hurricanes on pace to finish this season (Golden's 4th with Miami) 6-6, and as a result could place Al Golden on the hot seat, pr perhaps out of a job.  This Saturday's contest is not only a huge must win game for Georgia Tech, but it's also a big game in deciding Al Golden's future as the head coach for the Miami Hurricanes.

How Hot Is San Francisco 49ers Coach Jim Harbaugh's Seat

The San Francisco 49ers won against the Philadelphia Eagles 26-21.  Apparently no one cares.  What matters is head coach Jim Harbaugh is sitting on a hot seat.  How hot is it?  Depends on who you believe.

Before the season began, ex-quarterback and current ESPN analyst Trent Dilfer called the locker room atmosphere of the 49ers "toxic".  He repeated the claims Monday.

In the first week of the season NFL Network reported Harbaugh was losing or had lost the locker room.

And now Hall of Famer and NFL Network analyst Deion Sanders is quoting the infamous unnamed sources saying that Harbaugh and the players are "not on the same page" and the players "want him out."

Is Harbaugh on the hot seat because "players want him out?"  Or is he on the hot seat because his team is 2-2 in an unforgiving conference?  Both.

While Harbaugh is dismissing the claims of losing the locker room by stating Monday, "Personally, I feel that's a bunch of crap."  It is a persistent rumor.  One that will be exacerbated with each loss the 49ers suffer.  And then there are the losses.  After beginning the season with a 28-17 win over the Dallas Cowboys, the Niners suffered two losses, including a defeat in their opening of their new stadium.  They lost to the Chicago Bears in that opening game 20-28.  They then went on to lose to the Arizona Cardinals 14-23.

In both losses the offense looked inept.  In fact in their win Sunday the offense appeared shaky.  Quarterback Colin Kaepernick was sacked four times and intercepted once.  He called an inopportune time out when clearly the head coach was looking to have the clock run out.  And Kaepernick finished the game completing only 17-of-30 passes. For a coach who is known as a quarterback whisperer, it may be time to shout.  Or is that what is making his seat a little uncomfortable?

Here is the #truth.  Winning makes everything better.  If Harbaugh's Niners start winning will there be an equal cooling effect on his bottom?  #Truth is it doesn't matter if his players don't like him if he wins.  #Truth is Harbaugh's khaki covered bottom is warm and getting warmer.  Not because his players think he is mean.  But because he is losing.

Harbaugh starts winning and watch the cooling effect.
