Ranking the Top 10 Quarterbacks in the NFL

Peyton Manning and Tom Brady. The two names are the gold standard of NFL excellence. While both future Hall of Fame quarterbacks down play the significance of facing each other and build up the importance of Denver and New England playing Sunday with playoff implications on the line (it seems every time they meet, playoff implications are on the line) they both know their importance to their “rivalry” in professional football.

It does not get any better than this.

If you are looking for something to hang your hat on for this game and the game within a game, beside the fact Manning is not the best playoff quarterback and Brady seems to thrive in the post season. Broncos’ fans will love the fact Brady has not done well over the years facing Denver. There are subplots all around this one.

If these two giants are the standard by which all quarterbacks want to be, then who comes next? Which signal callers are just below that line of perfection? And which new breed of passer will have their name etched in Canton?

Here is a list of the 10 best quarterbacks in the NFL today. Yes, it is open for debate. Let the argument begin.

College Football 2014: Power Ranking The Top 20 Quarterbacks

The quarterback, along with the center, is the only player on the football field who touches the ball on every play. In the NFL, according to Forbes.com, the quarterback gets paid the most money. Even mediocre professional quarterbacks retire as millionaires. Through high school football, typically the best player and best athlete plays quarterback. The quarterback is the inherent leader of the offense, and the spokesman for the team.

In effect, it is no coincidence that the best quarterbacks play for the best teams. In other words, the teams that will compete for a spot in the first college football playoffs will all have top-notch quarterback play.

The following list will look at the 20 best quarterbacks in the FBS level of college football for the 2014 season. It will begin with the 20th best and work its way down to No. 1. The criteria for this list is not only who are the most inherently talented quarterbacks in the country, but also who will be most valuable to his team. This does not mean the quarterback in question has to play on a team destined to win its conference, but it certainly wouldn't hurt. Moreover, even the casual reader will quickly notice that if one compiles a list of the top 20 teams in the country heading into the 2014 season, many of these quarterbacks have a spot on those respective teams' rosters.

Lastly, Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller would have made the list, but he is been withheld, because he will not compete this season due to injury.
