The Eagles Want To Trade Up For Marcus Mariota

According to sources the Philadelphia Eagles want to trade up to get Heisman winning quarterback Marcus Mariota in the upcoming NFL draft. The Tampa Buccaneers have the number 1 pick followed by the Tennessee Titans having the second overall pick. Both teams are in need of a franchise quarterback. More than likely Marcus Mariota and or Jameis Winston will go number 1 followed by the other quarterback going number 2 in the draft.

The problem the Eagles will face is that there will be a few more teams that could be thinking about trading up to draft a quarterback. The Washington Redskins, New York Jets, St. Louis Rams and the Houston Texans are all in need of a quarterback and might be willing to trade up to draft Mariota.

Some have said that it will take a few number 1 picks and a few number 2 picks for the Eagles to trade up for the number one pick. I think the Eagles could save some picks in my proposed trade that makes sense for both teams. The Eagles trade their current starting quarterback Nick Foles and their first round pick this year and maybe next year to the Buccaneers for the number 1 pick. The trade works out perfectly for both teams. The Eagles have Foles on their team who is a good quarterback that can lead an up and coming Buccaneers offense. While Marcus Mariota is a better quarterback for Chip Kelly’s offense then what Nick Foles was. Before Chip Kelly took over as head coach of the Eagles, he was the head coach of the Oregon Ducks. Oregon is the same college Mariota went too. Kelly coached Mariota for only his freshman season, to which they went (12-1). Kelly runs the same offense with Philadelphia as he did when he coached Oregon so the offense will be familiar to Mariota.

Nick Foles could be the perfect quarterback for the Buccaneers. Looking at a few of the upcoming free agent pool for quarterbacks there isn’t much to pick from (Mark Sanchez is the top free agent quarterback this year, yeah it’s that bad). Nick Foles had a great year last year where he threw for almost 3,000 yards while throwing 27 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions. Foles had an average year this year before going out for the year with an injury. Nick Foles would be a good quarterback to match up with rookie wide receivers Mike Evans and veteran wide receiver Vincent Jackson.

The Eagles will have to give up a lot to get Mariota. If they think he is the franchise quarterback they need to get over the hump and win their first Super Bowl it could be worth it. The Eagles better not wait too long to make their move to trade for the 1st pick.
