Shane Ray Arrested For Possession Of Marijuana: His Free Fall Continues
University of Missouri outside linebacker and top NFL Draft prospect Shane Ray has been arrested for possession of marijuana, just three days before arguably the biggest night of his life. Just a week ago, Ray was regarded by most as a lock in the first round and a probable top ten pick. However, with newfound injury concerns regarding his toe surfacing last week and this arrest, it may not be out of the realm of possibilities to see him fall to the late first round or even early second.
Ray was arrested at 6:07 AM on Monday and was charged with Possession of 35 grams or less of marijuana and failure to drive in the right lane of the highway with two lanes or more by the Missouri State Police. He was released on bail shortly thereafter. This mistake could prove to cost Ray millions if he does indeed plummet down the draft board come Thursday.
Ray is considered one of the best pass rush prospect in the draft and most experts are projecting him as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme. With a player like Josh Gordon who has had several suspensions due to marijuana usage fresh in the minds of General Managers across the league, this will most likely prove to be a costly mistake for Ray. If he is unable to resist the temptation of marijuana three days before the biggest night of his life, what’s to say he will be able to resist once he starts playing in the NFL. Some general managers may even take him off their board entirely.
Ray is only 21 years old and will have time to grow and learn from his mistakes. It will be very interesting to see where Ray winds up come this weekend. If he is able to get his head screwed on straight, he could be one of the steals of the draft for one lucky team if he falls as expected.
