Will the Same Off-Field Issues Lead FSU to a National Title?

Twenty-one years ago, a football team in Tallahassee was in the middle of a great run through college programs. It had a soon-to-be Heisman Trophy winning quarterback and a head coach on the cusp of winning his first national title. Oh, did I mention the team that did eventually win the national title and claimed a Heisman, suffered a loss to Notre Dame and still was able to get to the top of the mountain.

Last season, a football team in Tallahassee was in the middle of a great run through college programs. It had a soon-to-be Heisman Trophy winning quarterback and a head coach on the cusp of winning his first national title. Oh, did I mention the team that did eventually win the national title and claimed a Heisman, suffered some off-field issues which hampered the run a bit, but the school went undefeated and the off-field issues seemed to dissipate, or so we thought.

This season, in the middle of an undefeated run to a potential second straight national title, this same team cannot get away from the issues that affected the program last year and a Heisman winning quarterback who cannot seem to keep his nose out of trouble.

For Florida State, it is one thing after another, after another.

Can a team, that has the most talent in the country, but has not played up to its potential, not only beat Notre Dame on Saturday, but finally put to rest the issues surrounding Jameis Winston so head coach Jimbo Fisher can lead this program to another national title?

In the most recent accusations against the all-world quarterback, it appears so far, according to ESPN.com, there is no proof Winston was paid to sign autographs, much like Todd Gurley was accused of and was suspended by the University of Georgia and the NCAA.

Gurley has since been reinstated, but it is not known if he will play again for Mark Richt in Athens.

According to the report on ESPN.com, there is plenty of “unknowns” surrounding Winston in this matter.

Florida State said Friday its athletic department compliance staff is reviewing the reported authenticated signatures by Jameis Winston, but has yet to find evidence that the star quarterback accepted payment for the autographs.

ESPN reported Thursday that more than 2,000 authenticated signatures by Winston have been found on the James Spence Authentication website.

"At this time we have no information indicating that he accepted payment for items reported to bear his signature, thereby compromising his athletics eligibility," the statement said. "The fact that items appear on an Internet site bearing the signature of a student-athlete does not singularly determine a violation of NCAA rules."

Winston has signed a tremendous number of autographs in public, particularly at baseball games, but the fact hundreds of signed jersey numbers and more than 50 signed jerseys, photos and mini-helmets were sequentially numbered by JSA's website suggests the possibility that the signatures might have come from an organized signing event.

Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher told reporters after the team's victory last weekend against Syracuse that Winston told him he did not get paid for signing the items. No one has publicly alleged Winston got paid for these items, unlike the case involving Georgia running back Todd Gurley, who has been suspended indefinitely while the school conducts an investigation into whether he got paid for doing private autograph signings.

"We have kept both the conference office and the NCAA apprised of our efforts on this matter," the statement from Florida State said. "The University takes very seriously any and all allegations of potential rules violations and processes them in accordance with ACC and NCAA policies and procedures."

Whether there is culpability on Winston’s part in this matter may not mean a thing in the world of public opinion. The redshirt-sophomore’s credibility is at the center of this issue after many violations on and off campus in Tallahassee, which includes being accused of sexual assault last season from an incident in 2012. Winston was not prosecuted by the State Attorney for what was determined to be a lack of evidence in the matter. Since then, Winston has been accused of stealing crab legs and making improper comments of a sexual nation in the school’s Student Union, which led to his being suspended this season for the Clemson game – where the Seminoles barely won in overtime.

Throughout the entire process, Winston has tried to brush off the attention and place the focus of the program on winning football games and national titles. The school also has lost a bit of support from national fan bases – where the dislike of the situation has led to an almost “bad boy” image for the program much like Oklahoma and Miami of the late 1980s or the Oakland Raiders of the late 1970s.

Winston has played well this season, but the Seminoles have not played to their potential. Can they put it all together on Saturday night with Notre Dame in Tallahassee and a chance to prove this is a program that can survive through everything all over again?

The Seminoles may win the battle against the Fight Irish and reclaim the top spot in the national rankings, but if the NCAA and the media continue to investigate the program, Winston and Fisher cannot win the war.

New Orleans Saints Disrespect Darren Sproles, Don't Do The Same

Do you play Fantasy Football? If the answer is yes, this week is the most exciting opportunity in the history of the game. Win a MILLION DOLLARS playing Fantasy Football this week only! Go to www.FFChamps.com/million and get in on the action.

Philadelphia Eagles running back Darren Sproles said Thursday that he felt his former employer, the New Orleans Saints, "disrespected" him with the treatment he received from the team last March.

"Listen, I understand this is a business and all of that, but (when they traded me) they put it up on Twitter," Sproles said according to NJ.com. "That's how I found out."

As pointed out by NFL.com in an article Thursday, Sproles' tweets from March back up his story.

Not that the loss of Sproles is the sole reason for the Saints offensive struggles in the early part of 2014, but New Orleans could certainly use another dynamic playmaker. Fantasy owners should be careful not to make the same mistake New Orleans made over the offseason.

Sproles is listed at $5,100 this weekend in the Draft Kings contest. Although he has rushed for just 24 yards on three carries in his last two games, he is an interesting play at that price.

The Eagles woes in the running game can be credited with the health of the offensive line, or lack of health. Only one of the Eagles five opening day offensive lineman started last week against the 49ers. Three of the five starters will be on the field to face the Rams in Week 5. Plus, the San Francisco defense is a bit stronger than St. Louis' defense.

Of course, there is always an element of boom-or-bust with Sproles. He makes big plays and when those big plays are not there, Sproles has very little fantasy production. But Draft Kings players are not going to take home the million installing all the safe players. The key is to find high-risk, high-reward players for the right value. Sproles may just be the guy.

2014 NFL Playoffs: Same Old Cincinnati Bungals

Over the last ten days, Cleveland has been in the NFL spotlight for accusing the football team of being the 'Same old Browns.' A reporter even went as far as to ask 'in the fans words, not his' if the Cleveland Browns were being run by the three stooges.
Although across the state in Cincinnati, the Bengals are not quite at the same woeful level as the Browns, Cincinnati failed to advance to the Division Round of the playoffs for the third straight season.
In 2011 and 2012, the Bengals made the playoffs as a wild card and had to play in Houston with an inexperienced quarterback in Andy Dalton. This year, Cincinnati controlled the AFC North and looked to host a home playoff game for the first time since 2009. The biggest threat to the Bengals reign atop of the division was, and always will be, the Baltimore Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Despite only going 2-2 against the Ravens and Steelers this season and Dalton struggling in those games, throwing seven touchdowns and seven interceptions, the Bengals captured the AFC North. Furthermore, Pittsburgh and Baltimore both missed the playoffs for the first time since 1999.
It was fitting that Pittsburgh nearly squeezed into the playoffs if it were not for a Ryan Succop missed field goal as time expired. The miracle playoff berth for the Steelers would have forced a fifth game for Dalton and the Bengals against a division foe. Then, Dalton would have had to prove he could win a playoff game versus the team that has been a constant thorn in the franchise's thigh, but Dalton avoided that situation. Even though the Bengals did not take the next step by dominating the AFC North in 2013, no team from the division stood in the way of Cincinnati's first deep playoff run in 25 years.
Cincinnati was at home in Paul Brown Stadium, a place the Bengals went undefeated in during the regular season, against the 9-7 Chargers. On paper, Cincinnati was arguably the most talented and balanced team in the AFC.
But come playoff time, the Bengals continued to make the same mistakes. Rookie running back Giovani Bernard fumbled the ball inside the five-yard line before going in for a touchdown, Dalton threw two costly interceptions and turned the ball over a third time with a fumble, and the defense could not slow down the washed up Ronnie Brown.
The Bengals did not score a single point in the second half.
There will be a lot of question marks to be answered this offseason. Head coach Marvin Lewis told Dalton that he would remain the starting quarterback of the team according to ESPN, however, that does not mean others will not speculate or hope for a change at the position.
It may be unfair to pin the entire loss on one player, but it is hard to figure out what else will need to be improved in the offseason as this was the best Bengals roster in years. It is just as hard to figure out how Dalton can beat great quarterbacks like Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Ben Roethlisberger, Joe Flacco, oh, and Philip Rivers in the regular season, then lose to Rivers in the playoffs, at home.
In three postseason games, Dalton is 0-3 with six interceptions and one touchdown pass.
One thing is not hard to figure out, Baltimore and Pittsburgh too good of organizations to be 8-8 football teams for too long. In a down year for both those teams and the roster they had, Cincinnati should have dominated with a 12 or 13 win season. Instead, Cincinnati fans will have to wait a little longer to get its first playoff win since 1990.
Same old Bungals.
