New York Jets v Kansas City Chiefs: 3 Things We Learned

The New York Jets traveled to Arrowhead Stadium to play the Kansas City Chiefs.  No one expected the current incarnation of the Jets to win.  Expectations were met.  And still there were lessons to be learned.  Here are three things we learned  from the game.

3. The New York Jets front line got outplayed by the Kansas City Chiefs front seven

While the Jets season is in a tailspin, the bright spot was the defense, specifically the front seven.  Were they overrated, too much optimism?

But at the end of the game it was the Chiefs' defense that was the bright shining spot.  Specifically linebacker Justin Houston.  Houston completed the game with four tackles.  More importantly, he also had two sacks.  Both sacks came at the expense of the elusive Michael Vick.  Those two sacks bring Houston's season total to 12 sacks.

2. There was an Eric Decker sighting

Was it the change of quarterback?  Decker was targeted 12 times.  He caught nine passes for 63 yards and one touchdown.  That's one more touchdown than he had in the last two weeks.  That was one less target than Percy Harvin.  It isn't gang-busters, but it is a start.

1. Michael Vick is a viable option

When Michael Vick's head bounced off the ground in the fourth quarter, Jets nation whispered "I told you so".  But then after going through the NFL's concussion protocal, Vick returned.  He not only returned but he has been named the starter for next week's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In the game Vick passes for 196 yards, one touchdown and zero interceptions.  Yea, he is the better option.  Now if he can only stay healthy.

Kansas City Chiefs 'State of the Season' Infographic - Week 9

It's time for another update after Week 9 for the "State of the Season" Report in inforgraphic form. This new weekly series of our beloved Kansas City Chiefs, boils down the current state of affairs for the team using an infographic that is heavy on the illustration and light on the rambling.

This infographic is being updated on a weekly basis to reflect the progress (or regression) of the team, with some key stats and history, as well as a quick summary on what went right or wrong over the past week.

This is the first time that a summary of the season will be captured in a single page summary for the fans.

The Chiefs' were able to grab another win and move into sole possession of 2nd place in the AFC West (after San Diego's schlacking at Miami) with a convincing win at home against the hapless New York Jets. After a Denver loss to Tom Brady and the Pats, Kansas City finds itself within one game of first place. While the victory never relly felt in doubt, KC still left some points on the field and allowed Michael Vick and company a few too many moments of promise. Are the Jets just not as bad as we all thought, or was KC caught letting off the gas for a short stretch?

Either way, Kansas City locked up the most important stat (the W) and now heads into Buffalo to face a team that also sits at 5-3 and within striking distance of their own division. This is a game the Chiefs should win, but they're going to have to earn it and show us all they are ready to take the next step as a team.

New York Jets vs. Kansas City Chiefs: 5 Things To Know

The New York Jets will limp into Arrowhead Stadium Sunday.  Last week an already inept offense contiuned a downward spiral with starting quarterback Geno Smith being benched in the first half after tossing three interceptions.  His replacement Michael Vick was responsible for one interception, four fumbles and four sacks.

Meanwhile the Kansas City Chiefs made strides of getting back on track.  Quarterback Alex Smith passed for 223 yards.  He had no touchdowns but also had no interceptions or fumbles.

Here are five things to know:

5. Geno Smith benched

After several inept performances Smith is benched for this game.  In his 2014 performances he has managed seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions.  His quarterback rating hoovers at 65.6.  So now after a 1-7 record for the Jets, Smith is benched and Michael Vick has been named the starter.

The real question is, is this benching Rex Ryan's last stand?

4. Michael Vick's start is against his redemption coach

Vick will start against the man who hired him after his release from prison.  Andy Reid gave Vick his second chance with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2009,  Vick started for Reid for three seasons including the 2010 season in which Vick won comeback player of the year.

Does the familiarity of Reid with Vick make this an even more dominating performance from the Chiefs defense?  As if they needed more help.

3. Jets offense is woefully bad

The Jets are 28th in total offense averaging 319.4 total yards a week.  They are 32nd in passing yards, averaging only 196.3 yards per game.  And they are 28th in points, averaging 18.0 points per game.

The one glimmer of hope is running back Chris Ivory.  Ivory is averaging 4.7 yards a carry with five touchdowns.  Which coincidently is the only category the Jets rank top ten in the NFL.  They are fourth in rushing yards averaging 140.0 rushing yards a game.

Will Vick negatively impact Ivory's stats?

2. Chiefs Defense is Really Good

Last week against the St. Louis Rams the Chiefs collected seven sacks.  The Chiefs defense rank first is passing yards allowed with 215.4 passing yards a game.  They are tenth against the rush, allowing 112.9 rushing yards a game.  And thrid in points allowed, allowing 18.3 points per game.  They are the third overall best defense in the league.  And the third overall scoring defense in the league.

Is it possible the Chiefs defense will put up more points than the Jets offense?  Ah-yep.

1. Jets front seven is still pretty good

The Jets still have one of the best rushing defenses in the league.  They rank sixth in the league allowing 85.4 rushing yards per game.  Last week as they were getting scorched against the Buffalo Bills, the defensive line held the Bills rushing game to a total of 67 yards, total.

They will be tested this week against running back Jamaal Charles.  Charles is averaging 4.58 yards per carry.   And when he is running well. so are the Chiefs.

Will stopping Charles and the rushing offense of the Chiefs pave the way to a Jets win?

Arrowhead is notoriously unhospitable to visiting teams.  It's not the place for the Jets to get a much needed win.

Prediction: Chiefs 31-Jets 20

Kansas City Chiefs 'State of the Season' Infographic - Week 8

Time for an update to Week 8's "State of the Season" Report in inforgraphic form. This new weekly series of our beloved Kansas City Chiefs, boils down the current state of affairs for the team using an infographic that is heavy on the illustration and light on the rambling.

This infographic will be updated on a weekly basis showing the progress or regression of the team, key stats and history, as well as a quick summary on what went right or wrong over the past week.

This is the first time that a summary of the season will be captured in a single page summary for the fans.

The Chiefs' were able to climb above .500 and a half of a game back (1 in the win column) for a tie for second place with the San Diego Chargers. KC has won two in a row after the bye week, and while the performance of the Rams left many of us feeling like this was a game the Chiefs "should have" won, they did just that. The defense made sure that Austin Davis will have nightmares for a long time thanks to the 7 sacks they put on him. Offensively, the Chiefs took many "small steps" by dinking and dunking their way downfield, but still leaned on Charles when it mattered down the stretch. The recipe was plenty fulfilling enough for this week.

Now Kansas City gets to stay home again next week to take on a Jets team that is literally in shambles and may have me or you starting at QB. Nonetheless, the Chiefs can't underestimate a team desperate to get a W for the sake of their (and their coaches') jobs.

St. Louis at Kansas City: Five Things to Know

Austin Davis

Last week the Chiefs stunned the Chargers by defeating them 23-20 and snapping San Diego's then-five-game winning streak while the Rams surprised the Seahawks with some chicanery, beating them 28-26 even while allowing QB Russell Wilson 313 passing yards, 106 rushing yards, and three touchdowns.

Whereas many would say, "Yeah, the Chiefs are going to win," based upon Kansas City's success last season (11-5), their renowned defense (heck, they held the lightning-hot Philip Rivers to a season-low 205 passing yards last week), and the rushing machines that are Jamaal Charles and Knile Davis, this match-up will likely not go "as planned"--whatever that may be in the NFL.

Then there are those (like a good friend of mine who boldly asserts before each game that, yuppers, the Rams are going to win even though I have told him repeatedly that Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk, and Isaac Bruce are no longer on the team) who say, "Wait a minute. The Rams BEAT the defending-Super-Bowl-champion (I think this adjective is somehow obligatory) Seahawks!"

Statistically, offensively, the two teams are relatively commensurate with the passing game favoring the Rams while the rushing edge favors the Chiefs. More specifically, Rams' QB Austin Davis is 135-205 for 1,520 yards, and nine touchdowns while Kansas City's Alex Smith is 119-of-186 for 1,270 yards and nine touchdowns. For WRs, St. Louis' Brian Quick has snagged 24 balls for 365 yards (15.2 average) and three touchdowns while Kansas City's Dwayne Bowe has seized 19 passes for 279 yards (14.7 average). Chiefs' TE Travis Kelce has caught 24 passes for 307 yards (12.8 average) with three touchdowns while the Rams' Lance Kendricks has 15 receptions for 127 yards (8.5 average) and three touchdowns.

On the ground, the Chiefs' tandem of Davis (83-352, 4.2 average, 3 TDs) and Charles (64-290, 4.5 average, 2 TDs) have a moderate edge over the Rams' Zac Stacy (61-240, 3.9 average, 1 TD) and Tre Mason (23-125, 5.4 average, 1 TD). Charles has also scored two receiving touchdowns on 11 catches for 55 yards. Oh and then there's the Rams' Benny Cunningham who has 36 carries for 136 yards (3.8 average), and two touchdowns AND 16 receptions for 121 yards (7.6 average) and another touchdown (I didn't know in which category to place him but thought he should be mentioned.)

Oh yeah, and both franchises have great kickers with nearly identical statistics. St. Louis' Greg "The Leg" Zuerlein has made 8-of-10 field goals and 15-of-15 extra points while Kansas City's Cairo "A Perna" Santos (that's "the leg" in Brazilian Portuguese) is also 8-of-10 in field goals and 16-of-16 in extra points.

Defensively, despite a -2 turnover ratio, the Chiefs have amassed a whopping 17 sacks, forced six fumbles, and managed three interceptions. For comparison's sake, the Rams have a -3 ratio, four sacks, three forced fumbles, and three interceptions.

Notwithstanding the sack stat for a moment, the rest of the data is comparably, well, comparable. But the Rams have their unique stratagem consisting of fake punts, misdirected punt returns, and who-knows-what-else head coach Jeff Fisher has in his bag o'tricks.

So, dear readers, you may ask if there's anything else of interest you may appreciate prior to the game in addition to the bevy of data I have already spewed. Of course. There is always something else to learn. Here are five additional things to know:

1. The Chiefs have met the St. Louis Rams 10 times and lead the series 6-4. Kansas City has won the last five games by an average of 19 points with their last meeting versus the Rams in 2010 resulting in a 27-13 win. Over these five games, the Rams surrendered, on average, 37.8 points to the Chiefs.

2. Kansas City ranks third in rushing yards per game (140.3); behind Dallas (159.7) and Russell Wilson, er Seattle (153.3). St. Louis' defense ranks 28th against the run, relinquishing 145 yards-per-game and 4.8 yards-per-attempt. Also kind of dismal, the Rams defense has surrendered, on average, 29.3 points-per-game (placing them second behind Tampa Bay at 34). The Chiefs' defense currently rank second in opponents' average passing yards-per-game with 209 (behind the Patriots at 208).

3. Chiefs' head coach Andy Reid's career record versus Fisher is 0-4.

4. Last week's victories were most triumphant for these two franchises. The Rams had lost 16 of the past 18 games versus the Seahawks and this was the Chiefs' first win in San Diego in seven years.

5. At the time of this article's writing, the point spread is Chiefs -8 with an over/under of 44.

Kansas City Chiefs 'State of the Season' Infographic - Week 7

Time for an update to Week 7's "State of the Season" Report in inforgraphic form.

The Chiefs' move to .500 and their record now stands at 3-3 after a huge road win in San Diego. While it may not always have been pretty, Kansas City siezed a prime opportunity to win a crucial game against a red-hot division opponent on the road. When that happens, you don't worry about how or why, you just take the win. We won't be getting any apologies from Andy Reid this week, as he finally decided to ride Jamaal Charles all the way to the win. The defense made timely stops, unlike in some earlier games this year, enabling the Chiefs' offense to dominate the time of possession battle and keep Rivers on the sideline.

Kansas City is back home next week against a Rams team that just upended the Seattle Seahawks in a nail-biter. This is another MUST-win for the Chiefs on their home turf and a chance to move closer to the top of the division.
