Ranking the 10 Best Running Backs in the NFL
In the latter part of the 20th century, names such as Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, and Walter Payton were considered the stars of the National Football League. Fast forward to today and the offensive publicity is dominated by names such as Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, and Andrew Luck. With elevated quarterback play and the emphasis on scheme-heavy offenses, the featured running back has become a rare breed in the 21st century offense.
Offensive coordinators have become more inclined to proceeding with what has become known as the "running back by committee" approach, in which backfield touches are spread among multiple backs to complement the team's aerial attack. However, a certain elite and esoteric group of running backs have maintained the age-old status of the "bell cow" back and continue to be the focal point of their respective teams' offenses.
