2015 NFL Draft: A Scout's Eye View, Jaelen Strong WR Arizona St.

Jaelen Strong WR Arizona State (RJr)

Measurables: 6'3 215 32.5" arms 9" hands

Combine Results: 4.44 40 yard dash, 42" vertical jump, 123" broad jump

Scouting Notes: Has an imposing, impressively powerful build for a wide receiver, unique for the position in that his frame is more reminiscent of a smaller linebacker or a taller running back, has good length and a muscular, well proportioned build with a powerful well built lower half...Hands are soft, but most notably strong, he attacks the football in the air away from his body, goes up strong for the football, has terrific natural pass receiving skills, snatches the football away from his body, capable of highlight reel catches, and capable of making challenging grabs look routine...Excellent hand/eye coordination...Wide catch radius thanks to his size, athleticism and velcro hands...Not quite Odell Beckham when it comes to pass catching ability, but he may the best ball skills of any receiver in the 2015 class, he will have lapses in concentration at times however, and will on ocassion drop an easy one...Excellent straight line speed, has the ability to seperate vertically, locate the deep ball and position his body accordingly, does a great job of stacking the defensive back once he gets a step, seems to also have an extra gear once the football is in the air, has the hand/eye coordination and body control to lay out and make the grab on overthrown deep balls...He's a big body receiver who makes big receiver plays...Very strong for the position and utilizes his size and strength well in traffic, also uses his size and strength in the running game as a blocker, seems to take pride in his downfield blocking, enjoys dominating his man, putting him on skates and sustaining his blocks up to, and at times through the whistle...His head to toe body strength makes him a difficult man to jam at the line and re-direct in his routes....Has quick feet as a route runner, a skilled route runner who knows how to change speeds, how to decelerate and accelerate to set up the man in front of him, highly deceptive on double moves with great stop/start ability, his explosion on the back end of double moves is very impressive...An explosive all around athlete, great acceleration off the ball as well as coming out of his cuts...Is just as effective working out of the slot as he is on the perimeter...Really shines on the back shoulder fade, a very popular route in today's NFL, has quick hands and does a nice job of not flashing them, not commiting his hands until the last moment, thereby not allowing the defender with his back to the passer enough time to react to break up the throw, just one of many aspects of his skill set that translates very well to the pro game, he may run the back shoulder fade better than any receiver in the class...Despite his obvious athletic talent, he's not nearly as good after the catch as he should be, gets brought to the ground or run out of bounds much easier than someone with his size, speed and strength should...He flashes the ablility to be special, but some of his gamefilm is much better than the rest, flashes glimpses of brilliance, but needs to add more consistency in all phases to reach his immense potential.

Draft Grade: Late 1st, Early 2nd Round
