Broncos-Patriots Recap (Week 9): Studs, Duds, and What We Learned

Yesterday's matchup featured two of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game. Playing against one another for the 16th time, the game was largely one-sided. In control from essentially the very beginning, the Patriots defeated the Broncos 43-21 yesterday night.

Much like the game against the Bears, the Patriots outplayed the Broncos in practically every phase of the game. Just like in last year's regular season showdown, Tom Brady out-dueled Peyton Manning. Brady had 4 passing touchdowns, 0 interceptions, and a passer rating of 97.4; Manning, on the other hand, had a passer rating of just 80.9, along with 2 passing touchdowns and 2 interceptions. While Manning did accumulate 438 passing yards in this game, many of those yards came when the game was largely out of hand. The Broncos offense was limited to just 21 points in the game, and their run game was practically non-existent. One of the main surprises from the game was that the Patriots were able to largely shut down the Broncos' star tight end Julius Thomas, as he was limited to just 2 receptions for 33 yards and a touchdown.

The Patriots head into their bye week on an extremely high note, as their offense has averaged more than 40 points over the past 5 games. The schedule after the bye doesn't get any easier, though, as the Patriots face six teams with winning records in their seven remaining games of the regular season (Colts, Packers, Lions, Chargers, Bills, and Dolphins). Nevertheless, their victory against the Broncos was a statement win for a team that many people had lost confidence in through the first four weeks of the regular season.

Here are the main studs and duds from Sunday's game:

STUDS:

1. Tom Brady

The Patriots quarterback put together his fifth straight great performance. In addition to throwing 4 passing touchdowns and having a passer rating of 97.4, Brady had 333 passing yards and completed passes to 6 different receivers. The future Hall of Famer has been fantastic for the past five weeks, having thrown 18 touchdowns and just 1 interception in that span.

2. Julian Edelman

While he was his usual dominant self in the passing game (he finished the game with 9 receptions for 89 yards and 1 touchdown), his contributions as a punt returner made his performance even greater. His 84-yard punt return for a touchdown occurred roughly midway through the second quarter, and proved to be a major game-changer for the Patriots. It was Edelman's fourth punt return for a touchdown since he became a Patriot.

3. Rob Gronkowski

Gronkowski's performance in this game brought back many memories of the 2011 regular season, where the tight end was practically unstoppable. He was often too much for Broncos defenders to handle, as even star linebacker Von Miller couldn't prevent him from scoring a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Right before that play, Gronkowski made a phenomenal one-handed catch with several Broncos defenders around him. This game was clear proof that when Gronkowski is fully healthy, the Patriots offense is extremely hard to defend.

4. Patrick Chung

Initially thought to serve as safety depth and contribute on special teams, Chung has surprisingly played very well for the Patriots so far this season. His strong season continued yesterday night, as he had 3 pass deflections and surrendered just four completions on 9 pass attempts for 52 yards and one touchdown (according to Pro Football Focus). Chung was also awarded a grade of +4.9 by Pro Football Focus.

5. Run Defense

Heading into this game, stopping the run had been a major issue for the Patriots defense. However, the run defense was fantastic versus Denver, as they limited the Broncos to just 43 rushing yards on 17 carries and a touchdown.

6. Rob Ninkovich

Once again showing his knack for big plays in big moments, Ninkovich intercepted an errant throw from Peyton Manning in the first half that proved to be a big momentum-changer. Showing great awareness on that play, Ninkovich's interception provided the Patriots' offense with a short field to work with, and they ended up scoring a touchdown just five plays later.

DUDS:

1. Running Game

Much like the Broncos' running game, the Patriots' running game was largely non-existent yesterday. While a lot of credit should go to the Broncos' stingy run defense, the Patriots' running still looked very flat, as the unit only mustered 66 rushing yards on 25 carries.

2. Penalties

A theme far too common in the first few games of this season, the Patriots committed an astounding 9 penalties in this game (3 of which came from cornerback Brandon Browner alone). The Patriots need to fix this issue during their bye week before they undergo the final stretch of the regular season.

Bears-Patriots Recap: Studs and Duds, and What We Learned

To the delight of many of its home fans, the New England Patriots destroyed the Chicago Bears 51-23, with most of the Bears' points coming when the game was already over (which was approximately at halftime). Tom Brady was a jaw-dropping 27-of-27 when targeting Brandon LaFell, Rob Gronkowski, and Tim Wright, as that receiving trio combined for 5 touchdowns in that game (three of them from Gronkowski alone). The running game also made major contributions in this game, as rookie running back and undrafted free agent Jonas Gray accumulated 86 rushing yards on 17 carries.

The Patriots defense deserves a lot of credit for the outcome as well, as the Patriots' pass rush sacked Bears quarterback Jay Cutler 3 times and caused a fumble that was returned by Rob Ninkovich for a touchdown. By halftime (which was when the game was essentially over), the Bears offense had only generated 7 points.

The Patriots face a much tougher matchup--the Denver Broncos--this upcoming Sunday, who could end up being a major handful if the Patriots aren't careful. But if they're anywhere near as successful as they were against the Bears, the Patriots have a good shot of winning this game.

Here are the main studs and duds from Sunday's game:

STUDS

1. Tom Brady

Once again proving his naysayers (who said he was on the decline and no longer elite, or even good) wrong, Brady put together one of the best perfomances of his career. He frequently shedded the Bears weak defense, as he was 30/35 for 354 yards and 5 touchdowns. Brady has really been on a tear over the past four games, and was awarded a grade of +8.9 by Pro Football Focus for his historically great performance, as none of his passes were labeled as being off-target (of those 5 incompletions, 2 were drops by Julian Edelman, 1 was a drop by Shane Vereen, and the last incompletion was a miscommunication).

2. Rob Gronkowski

Like Brady, Gronkowski has been nothing short of fantastic over the past four games (except for maybe the Jets game). The gigantic tight end looks like he's (finally) fully healthy, which is great news for a Patriots offense that struggled for much of its first four games.

3. Brandon Lafell

Since Week 4 versus Oakland, Lafell has developed a strong rapport with Tom Brady, and it's shown in his stats. After being catchless over the first two games of the season, Lafell has accumulated 30 receptions for 461 yards and 4 touchdowns over the past 5 weeks.

4. Darrelle Revis

Leading into this game, Revis had been having a very up-and-down season. While he had put together geat performances versus Minnesota, Cincinnati, and Buffalo, his other perfomances were either a mixed bag (versus Miami and the Jets) or bad (versus Kansas City and Oakland). Against the Bears, however, Revis was truly at his best. He shut down Bears wide receiver Brandon Marshall, allowing just 1 of 6 passes for 11 yards when Revis covered him (according to Pro Football Focus). In addition, according to Pro Football Focus, Cutler had an atrocious passer rating of 6.3 and an interception when targting Revis.

5. Offensive Line

After struggling mightily through the first 4 games, the Patriots' offensive line has made a lot of progress over the past 5 weeks. The unit was particularly outstanding on Sunday, as Brady wassn't sacked or hit in the game. This game showed that when the offensive line and Gronkowski are clicking, the Patriots' offense is hard to contain.

6. Jonas Gray

The undrafted rookie runnning back did a great job in place of the injured Stevan Ridley, as he shredded the Bears' run defense with relative ease.

7. Tim Wright

The 2nd string tight end had his second great performance of the season (the first one being against Cincinnati), as he recorded 7 receptions for 61 yards and a touchdown. The Tim Wright-Logan Mankins trade has finally started to pay off.

8. Rob Ninkovich

After a rough start through the first seven games of the season, the 6th year Patriots put on a great performance against the Bears, registering one quarterback hit, one stuffed run, and a 15-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown.

DUDS

1. Prevent Defense

Whie 16 of the Bears' points came when the game was already out of hand, the Patriots' prevent defense inflated Jay Cutler's stats tremendously. As a result, Cutler's numbers made his performance look a lot better than it actually was, as he piled up 3 passing touchdowns and a passer ating of over 100.

2. Julian Edelman

While he had a terrific 42-yard punt return, Edelman was largely invisible in the passing game for the second straight week, as he notched just one reception for 14 yards. He also dropped two passes in the game, bringing his drop total to four for the season.

NFL Fantasy Football Midseason Recap, Five Studs and Five Duds

An intriguing NFL season is already heading into its ninth week. By now, some of you are fighting for your fantasy football life while others of you are sitting pretty at the top of your league. That probably has a lot to do with whether you have any of these guys on your team.

Studs

1. DeMarco Murray (RB, Dallas Cowboys)

DeMarco Murray has looked like the fantasy MVP so far this season. He has been a workhorse who is on pace for well over 400 touches. He has been a dominant back while averaging 21.3 points per game. The Cowboys seem dedicated to give the ball to Murray over and over again but you have to wonder if this will eventually take a toll. He has eight straight games with over 100 yards rushing. If he can remain healthy, he will continue to be arguably the top RB play each week for fantasy purposes.

2. Peyton Manning (QB, Denver Broncos)

Peyton Manning is firmly in the discussion to repeat as MVP this season of the NFL. He has been lights out in fantasy this year. In seven games this season, Manning is averaging 24.7 points per game. If your fantasy team has any receiver on the Broncos roster, they are a virtual must-start each week with Peyton Manning dishing the ball out. If you have No. 18 as the QB for your fantasy team, you are probably contending for the top spot in your league this year.

3. Rob Gronkowski (TE, New England Patriots)

Gronk struggled with injuries in the 2013 season and fell out of the fantasy spotlight as tight ends Julius Thomas and Jimmy Graham had breakout seasons. He is averaging 12.2 points per game but that number will continue to rise as the Patriots are beginning to click on all cylinders once again. This Sunday against the Chicago Bears, Gronk caught three TD passes as he dominated the porous secondary. He is way to difficult of a matchup for teams to cover him. No. 87 is a must start, top three fantasy TE every week.

4. Matt Forte (RB, Chicago Bears)

Forte has been the only bright spot of this Chicago offense so far this year. He is averaging 17.7 points per game and is a top three RB play each week. Forte has six touchdowns this year. He is doing a lot of his damage in the passing game as he has 70 targets so far this season. Forte is on pace for 2,104 all purpose yards.

5. Sammy Watkins (WR, Buffalo Bills)

The rookie fourth overall draft pick out of Clemson has been dynamite for the Bills this season. Amidst a quarterback change, Watkins has provided stability at the wide receiver position. He has elevated himself to the No. 1 option for the Bills. Watkins is averaging 11.1 points per game but has found the endzone five times this season. His overall production will go up as his targets are beginning to increase. With a more consistent Kyle Orton dishing the rock, look for Sammy Watkins to emerge as a borderline WR1 in the coming weeks.

Duds

1. Jordan Cameron (TE, Cleveland Browns)

Jordan Cameron was expected to have a monstrous 2014 campaign. He was arguably a top five fantasy TE coming into the season. Cameron's numbers have been a repercussion of inconsistent quarterback play from Brian Hoyer, but really he is just not getting it done so far. He is averaging a measly 5.2 points per game and has only found pay dirt once this season. Now it looks like he will be dealing with the injury bug once again as he left Sunday's game against Oakland with a concussion. Yes he has great upside but there are more trustworthy options out there at the TE spot. Even once he gets healthy, Cameron is nothing more than a low end TE2.

2. Cam Newton (QB, Carolina Panthers)

Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers have been disappointing so far this season. The Panthers are 3-4-1 and lack the grit that the team had last year as they reached the playoffs. Yes Cam Newton is averaging 17.9 points per game but he has only thrown eight touchdown passes and ran for just one. He has also lost three fumbles and thrown 4 INTs this season. Cam has averaged over 20.4 points in each season of his career and should easily be producing at least that number every week as he is one of the best dual threat quarterbacks in the league. If you have Cam Newton you're going to continue to start him as long as he is healthy because of his tremendous upside but don’t be surprised if he throws up a dud every game or so.

3. Chris Johnson (RB, New York Jets)

CJ2K was acquired by the Jets in the offseason and was supposed to bring a weapon to the Jets offense that was anemic in 2013. But in a crowded backfield and with the emergence of Chris Ivory as the feature back, Johnson is averaging just 5.8 points per game. He has found the endzone only once this season. Johnson is droppable in all 10-12 team leagues.

4. Vincent Jackson (WR, Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

I have to start by saying that this may be a little unfair to V-Jax as his stats are a product of a shaky quarterback situation once again. He has continually been put in bad situations throughout his career. Because of this, he is just not a consistently productive WR in fantasy right now. A top 15 fantasy play at WR coming into the season, Jackson is averaging just 5.8 points per game. He has found the endzone only twice this season. Jackson has plenty of upside each week but is nothing more than a WR3 with upside going forward.

5. Adrian Peterson (RB, Minnesota Vikings)

Off the field issues finally found a way to affect your fantasy team. If you were like me, you had a top three pick in your fantasy draft and passed up on studs like Matt Forte and DeMarco Murray in favor of AP. Adrian Peterson played just one game before being indicted on child abuse charges. He will be a non-factor for the rest of the fantasy season and if you've buried him on your roster in hopes of a return, it may be time to finally let him go.

Jets-Patriots Recap: Studs and Duds, and What We Learned

The Patriots can thank a blocked field goal by Patriots' defensive lineman Chris Jones for their Thurdsay night victory over the Jets. Jones redeemed himself from his costly penalty against the Jets the last time both teams played against each other, as it ended up negating a missed field goal by Nick Folk in overtime. The Jets ended up driving into closer field goal range and kicking the game-winning field goal, thus defeating the Patriots 30-27.

Much was different from this Week 7 game and last season's Week 7 game, however. For one thing, Tom Brady didn't play poorly in this game (whereas he did play very poorly in last season's game). In addition, unfortunately, Jets quarterback Geno Smith played pretty well in this game (while he had a very up-and-down game last season). Still, both games were extremely competitive and came down to the final seconds. While it was a solid team victory, the Patriots have a lot to work on before they play the Chicago Bears this upcoming Sunday.

Here are some of the main studs and duds from the Patriots' 27-25 victory over the Jets:

STUDS:

1. Tom Brady

The Patriots quarterback put on his 3rd straight great performance, as he dissected the Jets pass defense with relative ease. While his completion percentage was only 54%, Pro Football Focus wisely notes that Tom Brady "had four throwaways, one batted pass and four dropped passes." When factoring in all of that, Brady actually had an adjusted Accuracy Percentage of 77.4%. He has clearly rebounded a lot from that Week 4 disaster versus Kansas City.

2. Shane Vereen

With Ridley out for the remainder of the season with MCL/ACL tears, it was clear that Vereen would be given a much larger workload. The running back/receiving back truly shined on Thursday, amassing 43 yards on the ground and 71 receiving yards on 5 receptions (among them a great 49-yard diving touchdown catch in the first quarter on the Patriots first offensive drive of the game). He also caught a 3 yard touchdown pass from Tom Brady in the second quarter.

3. Danny Amendola

The much-maligned wide receiver was very impressive on kickoffs, amassing 105 yards on 4 kick returns. He also made a terrific 19 yard touchdown catch from Tom Brady roughly midway through the fourth quarter. This was by far Amendola's best performance this season.

4. Chris Jones

As mentioned above, Chris Jones blocked what would've been a game-winning field goal by Jets kicker Nick Folk in the final seconds of the game. Jones also made his presence felt on defense, as he registered two quarterback hits in the game.

DUDS:

1. Run defense

The Jets' running game (specifically running back Chris Ivory) had their way with the Patriots' run defense, steamrolling them for 218 rushing yards on 43 carries (5.1 average yards per carry). While losing linebacker Jerod Mayo for the season definitely hurt the Patriots in this game, the Patriots run defense was nevertheless a major sieve, and needs to be fixed before Chicago Bears star running back Matt Forte comes to Foxboro on Sunday.

2. Julian Edelman

While Edelman has been by far the most productive wide receiver for the Patriots so far this season, he had two back-breaking drops in the fourth quarter. He finished the game with just 4 receptions for 44 yards.

3. Jordan Devey/Marcus Cannon/Nate Solder

All three of the above offensive lineman struggled in pass protection, as they failed to contain Jets star defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson (1 batted pass and 3 quarterback hits). Fellow Jets star defensive end Sheldon Richardson also had a strong performance, registering 5 tackles and 1 quarterback hit. While Brady ended up only getting sacked once, the Jets were able to register 7 quarterback hits in this game, many of which came in the second half.

Fantasy Football: Biggest Studs and Duds of 2013

Dear editor, please ensure this is co-authored by Lucas Karr and Cooper Allen.
With most regular season fantasy football pools coming to an end in Week 16, Cooper and Lucas are changing things up for their final studs and duds piece of 2013. Each week they have broken down who they think will do well and who will not reach expectations. Now, they will stick with that theme, but focus on the entire season.
A variety of different players exceeded expectations this year and just as many failed to live up to them. In this piece, we will highlight the players at the top of these categories and hand out awards for the biggest studs and duds of the season.
Without further ado, here are your 2013 fantasy football studs and duds.
Quarterback Studs
Next
1 of 9
Cooper: Nick Foles

One of the biggest waiver wire pickups of the year was Philadelphia quarterback Nick Foles, who replaced Michael Vick in Week 6. After injuring himself in Week 7, he returned again in Week 9 and never looked back.

Through nine starts this season, Foles is averaging nearly 300 yards and three touchdowns per games while only throwing two interceptions. He has been able to put up points on the ground as well, rushing for over 200 yards and finding the end zone three times.

Despite starting seven less games than most players, he scored the 12th most fantasy points among all quarterbacks, ahead of the likes of Tom Brady and Colin Kaepernick. The Eagles are in good hands if Foles can continue to play the way he has been.

Lucas: Philip Rivers

Entering 2013 Rivers was coming off of a pair of bad seasons and was slipping into low-end QB2 territory. Rivers didn’t have many guys to throw to after the Chargers dealt with one injury after another to their wide receiving core, and Antonio Gates age plus the lack of a run game prior to this year seemed to mean another bad year for Rivers.

Well, I got that one all wrong. Rivers burst back onto the scene in 2013, especially early on. He had at least 400 yards in three of his first five games and at least three scores in three of those games as well. Until a week 16 match-up with the Raiders he scored at least 12 points per game and had numerous games over 35. Rivers was one of the steals of the draft.

Quarterback Duds

2 of 9
Lucas: Eli Manning

When the Giants won the Super Bowl twice in only a handful of years, I gave no credit to Eli Manning. He played with some of the best defenses in the league and a ground game that could eat up the clock and take pressure off of him. This year he was missing both of those aspects and the true Eli Manning showed up.

Manning was taken before my stud at the position and proved to be nothing more than a bad bye-week filler. I couldn’t even trust Manning to have a good game against a bad defense. Excluding week one of the year, Eli Manning NEVER surpassed 20 fantasy points in a game…..not once. His brother only had 3 games below 20 points. Ouch.

Cooper: Matt Ryan

From certain individuals to the team as a whole, the Atlanta Falcons have been nothing short of disappointing this season. This group was supposed to contend for the Super Bowl and many predicted that Matt Ryan would have a breakout year.

It has been a lot of the opposite, however. Ryan was barely able to crack the top 15 in terms of fantasy points scored by a quarterback. He surpassed the 4,000-yard mark again, but has thrown only 24 touchdowns while turning the ball over 20 times.

For a guy who many considered to be a fantasy draft steal at the beginning of the year, he certainly has not lived up to expectations.
 Cooper: Joique Bell

It was tempting to go with a guy like Eddie Lacy or DeMarco Murray as both men had solid seasons and were reliable in the RB2 spot and maybe even as a RB1 to some. Both of them were drafted usually in the middle rounds, however, and had expectations to be starting calibre players.

A man that was supposed to be a bench/depth pick in deep leagues and went undrafted in some of the smaller leagues, however, was Joique Bell. He came into the year with fairly low expectations as a backup to Reggie Bush in Detroit.

The Lions used both running backs throughout the season and each of them finished in the top 15 among fantasy backs. Bell was able to find the end zone eight times and had over 1,100 combined yards. His 164.18 fantasy points are more than those of Alfred Morris, Maurice Jones-Drew and Ray Rice. Not bad for a guy who was in very few, if any starting lineups in Week 1.

Lucas: Knowshon Moreno

I literally laughed out loud when I saw Moreno go in the fourth round of our re-draft. Moreno seemed to be about third on the depth chart for a pass-heavy team. He wasn’t even on my radar. But blocking for Peyton Manning is one of the only things that matter in Denver, and Moreno was the best of the trio at that.

He got off to a slow start in two of his first three games, but then hit the ground running and never looked back. With over 1500 total yards and a dozen scores, he has easily surpassed his best years in the league and has nearly doubled the combined output of 2011 and 2012 in one year! Owners have to be very happy with any risk they took on this “flyer”.
Lucas: Trent Richardson

Richardson was the number six player on my draft board going into the season. When he moved from the Brown to the Colts I liked him even more. But whether it was the change of scenery or just a lack of talent, T-Rich was a huge flop this year. Richardson didn’t finish in the top 35 at the position which means he wasn’t even good enough to start on most fantasy squads.

Richardson is averaging less than 3.0 yards per carry on the year. He has no burst and cannot break tackles. In just one short season he went from a super start to a complete bust. He might be the saddest player on this list.

Cooper: C.J. Spiller

It is hard not to like C.J. Spiller. I love watching this guy play as he can make big things happen almost every time the ball is in his hands. It is hard to ignore him as one of the bigger running back duds of the year, though. There was a ton of hype surrounding him prior to the season after he broke out in 2012.

He was a first-round pick in the majority of fantasy drafts and was supposed to be a reliable RB1 for his owners. That is not something he has been able to live up to in 2013. He has battled an injury, but he has still played and has not put up the numbers people expected him to.

Spiller has just 979 total yards and two touchdowns on the year, which is down from the 1,703 yards and eight scores he had a year ago. Anytime a first-round pick falls outside of the top 25 in terms of production, then it is safe to call him a dud.
Cooper: Alshon Jeffery

The future is looking very bright for the NFL at the wide receiver position. As players like Andre Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald get older, a new breed of talent has come along and is starting to take over.

After playing in just 10 games during his rookie year, resulting in only 367 total yards and three touchdowns, few people had Alshon Jeffery on their fantasy radar. He has stayed healthy this year, though, and is developing into one of the better wideouts in football.

Statistically, he has outperformed his own teammate in Brandon Marshall. That is by no means a knock on Marshall, but a tribute to how good Jeffery has been in 2013. Both of the Bears receivers are in the top 10 among fantasy point producers at their position. Marshall comes in a No. 7 and Jeffery is just ahead of him at No. 6 with 192.60 points.

Alshon has gone from being a late-round fantasy pick, to a legitimate WR1 or WR2. If that is not a stud then I am not sure what is.

Lucas: Josh Gordon

Going into the season Gordon was on my do not draft list. He had already been suspended once, for the first two games of the season, and he was a mistake away from possibly facing a season-long suspension. Plus, the dude plays for one of the worst teams in the league with no decent quarterback throwing the ball. Well, apparently no one told that to Josh Gordon.

Gordon easily leads the league in fantasy scoring among wide receivers. I can’t imagine what this guy could do with Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers throwing him the ball. He is making Jason Campbell look like a legit quarterback, something that is not easy to do.

Gordon deserves a huge payday
and should be an example to those guys who are faced with similar situation that putting football first and working hard at it can provide huge dividends.

Lucas: Lance Moore

I had this as a tie between Moore and Roddy White, but decided the factors for White were enough to give him a pass.

Lance Moore had a solid 2012 season where he posted over 100 yards and six scores. He had reached the six score or more mark in three straight seasons and it seemed he would be a nice WR2 with Brees throwing the ball a lot and Coach Peyton calling the shots. Thru 16 weeks he has only 384 yards and has only found the end-zone ONCE all year. With a ton of talent around him, Moore should have been seeing single coverage all day. It seems this is likely a sign of thing to come for Moore.

Cooper: Steve Johnson

When the fantasy football season kicked off, I avoided Steve Johnson like the plague. The quarterback situation was just too big of a mess in Buffalo and he is not the type of receiver to consistently make big plays out of nothing.

Other people, however, drafted him in the middle rounds and were relying on him as either a WR2 or a solid flex play. He turned out to be neither, finishing outside of the top 50 among receivers with only 597 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

This is definitely a disappointment after three straight seasons of at least 1,000 yards and six scores. Although he has missed a few games this year, his numbers in the games he did play were not what most owners expected.
Cooper: Jordan Cameron

Before I get into talking about how great Jordan Cameron has been this year, it is worth noting the season that Charles Clay has had in Miami. He has been a solid replacement for the injured Dustin Keller and his great performance has been overshadowed by the two tight ends Lucas and I are about to discuss.

Cameron has been one of two primary targets for the Browns, with wideout Josh Gordon being the other. It is incredible what these two have been able to do considering the state of the quarterback situation in Cleveland.

Gordon has lit up the league as Lucas mentioned and Cameron is right up there with the best players at his position as well. He trails only Jimmy Graham, Vernon Davis, Julius Thomas and Tony Gonzalez in fantasy points for tight ends and has been a pleasant surprise for anyone that took a late-round flyer on him.

Lucas: Julius Thomas

Thomas landed in the perfect storm this season in Denver. He was thrust into the starting line-up with the greatest quarterback of all time in a system that allows the tight end to see plenty of work. While Thomas essentially missed three games from injuries this year, that didn’t stop me from picking him as the tight end stud of the year.

Certainly based on ADP he was the steal of the draft for the tight end position. He scored in 10 of the 12 games he played in fully this year, which certainly pleased all of his owners. Manning liked to move the ball around, but in the red-zone Thomas was a beast. Don’t be surprised if he is the second tight end off of the board in 2014.
Lucas: Gavin Escobar

The Dallas Cowboys drafted Escobar in the second round of the 2013 draft and it seemed they would play a lot of two tight end sets and utilize him often. At 6’6 and 250 pounds he and Witten would be an unstoppable combo. I loved his upside.

But then the Dallas Cowboys decided not to use him. He only saw 14 targets on the year in limited playing time despite being one of the ore athletic weapons on their offense. Maybe Tony Romo needs less of the blame for any errors the Cowboys have to overcome. If they aren’t even going to use the weapons they drafted for him then they deserve whatever they get.

Cooper: Brandon Pettigrew

I was originally leaning towards Antonio Gates for this award, but he started out strong, has had some good games and was not drafted as high this year as he has gone in years past. A guy who was drafted around the same area as him that did not have the same success is Brandon Pettigrew.

Even though Nate Burleson missed some time with an injury, the tight end’s numbers have been significantly worse than they have been in previous seasons. Stafford is starting to look away from him and is finding other targets such as Joseph Fauria and Kris Durham.

Pettigrew has only 416 receiving yards and two touchdowns to date, which are the lowest totals he has had in a season since his rookie year. He is not a huge dud considering where he was drafted, but he has not exactly been a good play for fantasy owners this year, either.
Cooper Studs: 1 point

QB: Ryan Tannehill: 312 yards, 3 TDs, point

RB: Alfred Morris: 106 yards, TWO lost fumbles, no point

WR: Cecil Shorts: Out, no point

TE: Matthew Mulligan: nothing, no point

Cooper Duds: 1 point

QB: Andy Dalton: 250 yards, 2 TDs, no point

RB: Chris Johnson: 91 yards, TD, no point

WR: Brandon Marshall: 95 yards, 1 TD, no point

TE: Brandon Myers: 37 yards, 1 point

Lucas’ Studs: 2 points

QB: Nick Foles: 469 yards, 3 TDs, point

RB: Daniel Thomas: 18 yards, 1 TD, no point

WR: Keenan Allen: 29 yards, 2 TDs, point

TE: Dennis Pitta: 24 yards, no point

Lucas’ Duds: 3 points

QB: Andrew Luck: 180 yards, 2 TDs, 1 TO, point

RB: Le’Veon Bell: 107 yards, 1 TD, no point

WR: Victor Cruz: 25 yards, point

TE: Jared Cook: 8 yards, point

Week 15: Lucas 5, Cooper 2

2013: Lucas 49, Cooper 41
