The NFL's Biggest Surprises Of Week 9: Dolphins Are Contenders

The Steelers In The Race For First Place In Their Division

Just a half of a game behind the Bengals, the Steelers are in second place in the AFC North. At 3-3 after Week 6, the Steelers were considered the worst in their division, but they have come back, outscoring their past three opponents 124-80. The Bengals and Browns have struggled to carve out wins against seemingly inferior teams, while the last time that the Ravens have beaten a team with a record of .500 or better was in Week 3. Considering the standings, this division still looks to be up for grabs, but the Steelers are the hottest of them all right now.

The Chargers Were Shut Down At Home By The Dolphins

Ryan Tannehill put up the best numbers of his career, leading the Dolphins to a 37-0 victory over the now 5-4 Chargers. The Chargers are now on a three-game losing streak, which may be detrimental to their playoff run. The Dolphins on the other hand, are 5-3 and have put up three excellent performances in the row. After this game, Miami is now in close competition with the Patriots (7-2) and the Bills (5-3) for the AFC East title.

The Rams Upset The 49ers In Santa Clara

This game may be remembered by the controversial call at the end, but what one of the most notable occurances is that the Rams have held star running back Frank Gore to just 87 yards off of 30 carries in their two games this year. They also improved tremendously in coverage, as Colin Kaepernick threw for 106 yards and two touchdowns less than he had in their Week 6 match-up. The Rams may still buried in the NFC West race, though, as their offense cannot be relied on to put up points.

Peyton Manning And The Broncos' Offense Was Held To Just 21 Points

The Patriots' defense has been solid as of recently, even with key losses, but each of the Patriots' past three opponents put up more points than the Broncos. The Bills, Jets, and Bears are all ranked in the bottom half of the league in points per game, but they put up 22, 25, and 23 points against the Patriots, respectively. The Broncos, who have averaged more than 30 points per game, put up just 21, while Peyton Manning threw the ball a season-high 57 times.

The Raiders Are One Of The League's Most Competitive Teams

Calling the Raiders one of the most competitive teams in the NFL may be a bit of a stretch, but look at what they have done against great teams. Of their eight losses, they have lost four by one possession or less, and three of those games came against contenders. The Patriots, Seahawks, and Chargers are all very talented teams, but they beat the Raiders just by a combined 16 points. A touchdown for the Raiders would have won games against the Seahawks and the Chargers, while it would have tied things up against the Patriots. What is more impressive is that they were able to hold their own in Seattle and Foxborough, two of the hardest fields to play in as the away team.

The NFL's Biggest Surprises Of Week 8: AFC North Back In Business

The AFC North Impressed In A Week Of Redemption

The Browns put up one of the worst performances of 2014 against the Jaguars last week, but they rebounded against the Raiders. Ben Tate struggled once again, but Brian Hoyer and Andrew Hawkins stepped up in his place, connecting on a four-yard touchdown pass that gave them a lead that they would never lose. The Steelers, on the other hand, are on a winning streak for the first time in this season. After three abysmal showings, the Steelers convincingly won against the 4-4 Texans and the 5-3 Colts. The Bengals were considered the best team in football throughout the first few weeks of the year, but they then failed to win a game three weeks in a row. Going up against the consistently competitive Ravens in Baltimore, and without A.J. Green, the Bengals proved that they are still contenders. While the Ravens lost this week, they are still one of the more complete teams in football. Once seen as a regressing division, the AFC North made a statement in Week 8 and proved that it is one of the best in the league.

The Seahawks And Panthers Combined For Just 22 Points

While both teams are known for their defensive play, the Seahawks had scored 21+ points in all of their games prior, while the Panthers had put up 68 points from Weeks 5 to 6. The game's lone touchdown was a fourth-quarter pass from Russell Wilson to Luke Willson. Wilson and Marshawn Lynch have proven to be a dominant duo before, but they have failed to produce at high levels recently. The rookie Kelvin Benjamin had a productive day, recording four catches for 94 yards, but nothing else positive can be said about the two teams' offenses.

Kyle Orton Scored Four Touchdowns As The Bills Topped The Jets 43-23

Geno Smith's interceptions may have made it easier, but Orton still threw four touchdowns off of just ten completions. No receiver topped three receptions, while Orton threw just 17 total passing attempts. The Jets were expected to build off of a strong outing against the Patriots, but they may have played their worst game of 2014.

The Cowboys Lost To The Redskins In Overtime

DeMarco Murray had another great day, recording 221 yards from scrimmage, but the Cowboys' offense scored just 17 points. Murray fumbled the ball in Redskins territory, while fellow running back Joseph Randle fumbled as well. While the Redskins were unable to take advantage of those turnovers, they were able to move the ball outside of regulation. The main reason that the Cowboys lost was because of their inability to sustain drives. The Redskins' banged up defense did a nice job containing the Cowboys on crucial third downs.

The NFL's Biggest Surprises Of Week 7: Seahawks, 49ers Struggling

Jets Fighting Until The End

While The Patriots beat the Bengals and Bills in weeks previous, outscoring them 80-39, they struggled against the 1-6 Jets. Geno Smith played his best game of the season, throwing for 226 yards and one touchdown to zero picks. Chris Ivory picked up the slack too, recording his highest yards total this year while also scoring the team's first touchdown. The Jets came within a blocked field goal of winning the game, and a two-point conversion from going into overtime.

Could The Cardinals Be The Best In The West

The Seahawks and 49ers are a combined 7-6, while winning just one in the past two weeks, while the Rams, 2-4, have struggled to consistently hold up. The Cardinals are atop the division at 5-1, and have Carson Palmer back in the lineup. This is a very potent division, but the Cardinals are the only one with a reliability on both sides of the football.

Chargers Lost After Just Edging Out The Raiders Last Week

The Chargers have been strong all season, but there was some question after their 31-28 win against the 0-6 Raiders. The Chiefs were coming off of a disappointing loss in San Francisco, but they were as efficient as ever against the Chargers. Both Alex Smith and Jamaal Charles had nice days, while Philip Rivers, an MVP candidate, struggled to move the ball.

Bengals Shut Down, Falling Far

After winning by a combined 47 points in their first three games, but Bengals have gone 0-2-1. The Bengals were beat down the Patriots in Week 5, while struggling against the Panthers last week, but they were not able to do anything against the Colts. Andy Dalton averaged just 3.3 yards per attempt, while his offense just converted one of 13 third downs. On defense, they struggled mightily, as the Colts were able to consistently move the ball and put up points.

Do The Jaguars Have Themselves A Team

The Browns were thought to be a playoff team after starting off 3-2 and losing by a combined five points, but they fell to the previously winless Jaguars 24-6. The Jaguars had yet to top 17 points, and allowed four teams to put up 30+ points. Brian Hoyer and Ben Tate, a 1-2 punch that worked extremely well last week, did not play well at all. Hoyer completed just 39% of his passes and threw an interception, while Tate averaged just 2.25 yards a carry. Denard Robinson, who had just 160 rushing yards off of 48 attempts prior to Sunday, had a career day against the Browns. Robinson nearly doubled his career total in rushing yards, while scoring his first touchdown in the NFL.

The NFL's Biggest Surprises Of Week 6: Cowboys A Contender

Cowboys Upset Seahawks 30 to 23

The Seahawks won on special teams, returning a blocked punt for a touchdown and recovering a fumble on a separate punt. That, however, did not matter, as the Cowboys were able to move down the field with consistency against what was seen as the league's best defense. Turnover-prone Tony Romo did not throw a single pick, while tossing two touchdowns and completing 66% of his passes. DeMarco Murray, as always, was amazing, rushing for 115 yards and the game winning touchdown. The Seahawks' offense, on the other hand, was atrocious, as Russell Wilson averaged just two yards per attempt, while also throwing an interception late in the game. Surprisingly, Marshawn Lynch received just ten carries, while Wilson threw the ball 28 times.

Can The Texans Challenge The Colts And Become AFC South Champions

After trailing 24-0 at the end of the first quarter, the Texans scored two touchdowns before half, while scoring another touchdown in the other two quarters. Late in the fourth, the Texans were down just five, but Ryan Fitzpatrick fumbles and the Colts recover. At 3-3, one game behind the 4-2 Colts, the Texans may very well be competing to be atop the AFC South. With a potent defense led by J.J. Watt and a dangerous rushing attack led by Arian Foster, the Texans have a legitimate chance to make the playoffs and win the division.

Struggling Teams Putting Up A Fight

The Jaguars, Dolphins, and Raiders have struggled recently, but all three teams put up a fight in Week 6, losing by a combined eight points. The Jaguars' fourth-quarter field goal was blocked, while the Dolphins lost in the final seconds of the game. The Raiders held their own against the Chargers, leading 28-24 until Branden Oliver's touchdown run late in the game. The Jets deserve mentioning too, as they were within seven points against the Broncos until a pick six with 20 seconds left.

Steelers Continue To Have Trouble; Brian Hoyer Continues To Impress

The Steelers have been outscored 51-67 against the Buccaneers, Jaguars, and Browns, who each recorded just four wins last year. Ben Roethlisberger's stat sheet is great, tossing five touchdowns to just one pick, while completing 64% of his passes, while Le'Veon Bell has been one of the most productive backs this year. The problem with the Steelers' offense is that they have not been able to consistently move the chains. Meanwhile Brian Hoyer has been as efficient as ever, throwing the ball just 17 times, but for 217 yards. The Browns do not need to throw the ball a lot when Ben Tate gets 25 carries and the defense holds the opposing team to just ten points.

Panthers And Bengals Tie In Overtime

The Panthers and the Bengals are both very talented teams that are around the same level in terms of talent. It is not a surprise that this game is close, but it is shocking that both teams, tied at 34 to go into overtime, score a field goal on their first possessions and fail to score once more. Both quarterbacks threw costly picks in regulation, while both kickers missed a kick that may have won the game, Mike Nugent's being in overtime. Even with the mistakes, this was a great game by two great teams!

The 10 Biggest S.O.B.'s In The NFL Right Now

10.  DT Ray McDonald - San Francisco 49ers

Ray McDonald was arrested on August 30th, 2014 on charges of domestic violence.  As of today, the case has yet to go to trial and is in the hands of the district attorney's office.  As a result, no actions have been taken by the NFL or the San Francisco 49ers.  However, due to the nature of this arrest, and the potential results that could be handed down, I have included Ray McDonald in the list, but rank him the lowest until a legal ruling has been decided.

9.   WR Josh Gordon - Cleveland Browns

Josh Gordon quickly developed into the sure handed receiver the Cleveland Browns drafted him to become during the 2012 NFL Supplemental Draft.  During the off-season, Gordon tested positive again for marijuana again, which is his second violation of the leagues' substance abuse policy.  Since he was already suspended last season for the same infraction, the NFL originally suspended Gordon for the entire 2014 season, but his suspension was later reduced to 10 games by the league.

Cleveland has gotten off to a terrific start this season behind the relaible arm of Brian Hoyer.  When taking into consideration the additions the Browns made this off-season, and how well the team has played, you can't help but wonder how good the Browns might be right now, had Gordon not been suspended again for drug usage.

8.  LB Aldon Smith - San Francisco 49ers

Aldon Smith is highly regarded as one of the top defensive players on the San Francisco 49ers' roster.  He led the 49ers and tied for 5th overall in the league with 14.0 sacks during his rookie season.  He returned to lead the 49ers again with 19.5 sacks during his sophomore season, good enough for second overall in the league behind J.J. Watt (20.5).

Smith ran into trouble during the 2013 season, missing 5 games while he checked into rehab for alchoholism.  Smith finished tied as the team's leading sacker with 8.5 sacks during his 11 games played in last season.

Unfortunately for the 49ers, Aldon Smith's off the field troubles continued during the off-season, when Smith was suspended by the NFL for 5 games due to violating the league's conduct policy, and 4 games for violating the leagues' drug policy.  As a result, the 49ers defense has struggled this season without their top pass rusher on defense.  San Francisco has only produced 5 sacks so far (3 by Justin Smith) through five games, averaging only one sack per game.

7.  WR Brandon Marshall - Chicago Bears

Following an on the field incident while with the Miami Dolphins, Brandon Marshall was traded to the Chicago Bears.  As a result, the Dolphins added former Pittsburgh Steelers' veteran receiver Mike Wallace, who has performed well, while Marshall has continued his successful career becoming Jay Cutler's target of choice down field.

Brandon Marshall has had his share of on and off the field altercations during his NFL career.  His records dating back to 2004 would be too long to list in this article, but consists of numberous domestic violence reports and arrests.  In 2012, he was diagnosed with Borderline-Personality, a mental health condition in which a person has long-term patterns of unstable or turbulent emotions. These inner experiences often result in impulsive actions and chaotic relationships with other people.

While Marshall doesn't deserve to be suspended for charges and actions over two years old, he clearly has a history of troublesome behavior both on and off the field.

6.  LB Daryl Washington - Arizona Cardinals

Daryl Washington tested positive again for marijuana during the off-season, and as a result was suspended for the entire 2014 season by the NFL.  Washington could also face further league discipline from the NFL before all is sid and done, resulting from him being found guilty of assault during the off-season, from an arrest that took place on May 4th, of 2013.

Washington has been a key part of Arizona's success during the past four seasons, and has been one of the Cardinals' top defeders during his tenure in Arizona.  Last season, Washington followed up his breakout year in 2012 with 75 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 picks, and 11 pass deflections.  Those numbers have been missed this season, and like Josh Gordon (Browns) listed above, you can't help but wonder how good the Cardinals would be right now if he hadn't been suspended.

5.  RB Jonathan Dwyer - Arizona Cardinals

Jonathan Dwyer was arrested on a domestic violence charge on September 17th, 2014 from an altercation that took place back in July of this year.  Arizona immediately deactivated Dwyer, who remains on the Cardinals roster until a legal ruling is decided in court.

Dwyer entered this season as the primary backup to running back Andre Ellington, but he saw limited action during the first two weeks of the season, before the arrest and deactivation took place.  With Ellington healthy and playing well, the loss of Dwyer should be of little consequence to the Cardinals this season.

4.  S Will Hill - Baltimore Ravens

Will Hill was signed by the Baltimore Ravens to give their secondary a big lift at the safety position this season.  Unfortunately for the Ravens, before the season began, Hill tested positive for performance enhancement drugs, and was suspended for 6 weeks as a result.  There was specualtion his suspension would be reduced, but the reduction never took place.

As a New York Giant last season, Hill was effective in run support and pass coverages.  The Ravens had planned on having Hill start opposite of Matt Elam.  Hill is nearing the end of his suspension, and while the Ravens have played well without him, they will certainly be expecting more production from their secondary when he returns.

3.  DE Greg Hardy - Carolina Panthers

Pro-Bowl defensive lineman Greg Hardy was originally arrested on May 13th, 2014 on charges of domestic violence.  Hardy was originally found guilty of domestic violence, and communication threats in July.  Despite the ruling, it went overlooked by the Carolina Panthers until the fiaso with Adrian Peterson took place.  Following the Peterson incident, the Panthers' and Hardy agreed to have Hardy placed on the Commisioner's exempt list until his appeal case is decided by a jury.  In actuality, he's on paid suspention, as the appeal case likely wont take place until sometime in 2015 due to backcases.

Hardy's deactivation for the remaining 15 games of this season has already had a cripilling effect on the Panthers' defense.  Hardy is their premier pass rusher, leading the team in sacks during both of the past two seasons, with 11.0 sacks in 2012, and 15.0 sacks in 2013.

The Panthers have received a lift from defensive end Mario Addison, who has 4 sacks already this season, but they can't lose a top tier pass rusher without it effecting wins and losses.  Right now the Panthers are barely a .500 team, after finishing last season 12-4 and winning the NFC South.

2.  RB Adrian Peterson - Minnesota Vikings

Adrian Peterson was indicted in September on a felony charge for injury to a child (child abuse).  The charge stems from an accusation that Peterson had disciplined his child using a switch (wooden stick or rod).  After Peterson turned himself in, the Vikings quickly deactivated him until his legal issues are resolved.

Peterson was placed on the Commisoner's exempt list, which means Peterson, like Greg Hardy, will continue to get paid his weekly profits from games until a legal verdict is reached.  Unfortunately for the Minnesota Vikings, Peterson recently admitted to smoking marijuana prior to a court drug test, so it's very likely his bond will be revoked and another warrant for his arrest will be issued.

Adrian Peterson is one of the games most historic running backs in recent memory, and his loss has not helped the Vikings' quest to return to post-season play.  Expectations were higher this season in Minnesota, after the Vikings drafting young quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, but without Peterson on the field, the team is struggling to get out of last place in the NFC North.  There have been rumors floating around that Peterson has played his last game for the Vikings, if so, the Vikings might need to completely rebuild their existing offense.

1.  Ray Rice - Free Agent

Ray Rice avoided prosecution after knocking out his wife in an elevator during the off-season.  After a video of the altercation was made available to the public by the media, the Baltimore Ravens immediately distanced themselves from the situation and Rice himself, by terminating Rice's contract and releasing him.

The NFL followed up his release from the Ravens by suspending him indefinetely, or banning him, if you will, from the league.  As a result, the Ravens lost their premier rusher, which should have resulted in less offensive production this season.  However, running back Justin Forsett has made the most of this opportunity, and has quickly established himself as the top rusher in the Ravens' offense.

After veiwing the video, if there is one player that clearly deserves to never play for another NFL team, it's Ray Rice!  It would be a shame if the NFL were to ever reactivate Rice, what kind of message would that send?

The 10 Biggest Surprises Of The Young NFL Season

There have been old men playing well, young guys playing terribly, talks of the NFL imploding, and superstars struggling. This young NFL season has been full of surprises.

Of course there are some things that will never change like Peyton Manning playing at the top of his game and RGIII getting hurt.

The Seahawks D remains stout, Richard Sherman is still the best corner in the game (according to him). JJ SWAT AKA 100 million dollar bionic man continues to destroy offensive lines.

Some teams that could not find a win last year are competing. While other teams that could not find a win last year...have no wins this year.

Take a look at the 10 biggest surprises of the 2014 NFL season.

The NFL's Biggest Surprises Of Week 5: Orton Upset

Can Kyle Orton Lead The Bills To The Playoffs?

Completing 70% of his passes and throwing for 300 yards and a touchdown, Orton played well against one of the league's best defensive fronts. Not only did Orton do well stat-wise, he led his team to a comeback victory over the Lions, who were expected to win. Breaking a two-game losing streak, the Bills will certainly keep Orton in over E.J. Manuel.

Austin Davis Has Been Playing Like A Starting-Caliber Quarterback

Davis started off slow, but has thrown six touchdowns and 700 yards over the past two games, both of which were one-possession losses. Among quarterbacks with more than 100 passing attempts, Davis has the 10th best passer rating. His past two games would project to be 5616 yards and 48 touchdowns over a full season. Albeit he faced two of the league's less potent defenses, but he has shown starting capabilities.

The Saints May Miss The Playoffs

The NFC South as a whole has been disappointing, but the Saints were expected to be Super Bowl contenders. After losing to the Falcons in Week 1 and just edging out the Buccaneers at home, it is reasonable to believe that the Saints will not win their division. The Panthers, the divisional rival that they have yet to face, bounced back this week against the Bears and are the favorite to win the division.

The Patriots Are Back!

Many people expected that the Patriots would bounce back some time, but it was the fashion that they did so that was surprising. The Patriots beat the previously undefeated Bengals 43-17, scoring more points than the Bengals' previous three opponents combined. Turnovers were certainly a factor, but the Patriots' offense played its best it has this year by far. While their previous outings are still troubling, we all now know that they are still the playoff contenders that they have always been.

The Steelers Just Edged Out The Jaguars

After a loss to the Buccaneers at home, and just barely beating the Jaguars, the Steelers have been one of the fastest falling teams. It was not too long ago that they upset the Panthers, but they have certainly taken a step back. The Steelers' offense is very talented, but has been inconsistent, as they can not be relied on if the defense does not hold up. In a division with the Bengals, Ravens, and Browns, the Steelers have to step it up if they are to make to playoffs.

The Biggest ShakeUp Weekends in College Football History

The cross-hairs are still red hot.

Five Top 10 teams bit the dust this weekend. And ninth-ranked Notre Dame could've made this the most improbable college football weekend in history, had they not found paydirt on a last-second 4th-and-11 pass to the corner of the end zone vs. Stanford. Instead, the Golden Domers escaped with a 17-14 win in South Bend.

But the rest of the Top 10 wasn't so lucky.

No. 2 Oregon lost at home to Arizona, 31-24.

No. 3 Alabama lost at Ole Miss 23-17.

No. 4 Oklahoma lost at TCU 37-33.

No. 6 Texas A&M lost at Mississippi State, 48-31.

No. 8 UCLA lost at home to Utah 30-28.

That's five of the top 10 falling by the wayside. And we were THAT close to having an unprecedented six teams draw Ls this weekend, something that has never happened in modern college football history.

Just to show you how wild this weekend was, this is only the eighth time in the modern history of the polls (since they've expanded to 20+ teams) that there have been five teams in the top 10 lose in the same weekend.

With that in mind, prior to this weekend, here are...

The Biggest Shakeup Weekends in the Modern Era of College Football:

.

5- September 11, 1976

Four Top 10 teams lost and one tied, four of which came against unranked teams.

No. 1 Nebraska was tied at unranked LSU, 6-6.

No. 3 Arizona State lost to No. 17 UCLA 28-10.

No. 6 Alabama lost in Birmingham to unranked Ole Miss 10-7.

No. 7 Texas lost at unranked Boston College 14-13.

No. 8 USC lost at home to unranked Missouri 45-26.

Thanks to pre-season polls (even back then they should've been outlawed), this was probably more of a product of teams being over-rated going into the season. For example, ASU, who finished 12-0 and No. 2 in '75, finished this season at 4-7, Texas finished 5-5-1 and Nebraska ended up with three losses and a tie. Roller-coaster Missouri started its season giving SC its only loss of the year. In fact, Al Onofrio's Tigers were quite possibly the most interesting team in college football history, having beaten four Top 10 teams during the season, but went bowl-less at 6-5 overall.

.

4- October 11, 2003

Five Top 10 losses, three of which came to teams not ranked in the Top 25.

No. 3 Ohio State lost at No. 23 Wisconsin, 17-10.

No. 5 Florida State lost at No. 2 Miami 22-14.

No. 6 LSU lost to unranked Florida 19-7.

No. 7 Arkansas lost at home to unranked Auburn 10-3.

No. 10 Nebraska lost at unranked Missouri 41-24.

The ironic part about this was that LSU, despite losing at home to a team that finished 8-5, would go on to win out the rest of the way and earn a share of the national championship with a 21-14 win over Oklahoma in the Sugar Bowl. There was some high-quality in this list of losers since of the five victims on this particular weekend, only Arkansas would go on to end up the season unranked, at 9-4.

.

3- September 29, 2007

Five teams lost, four of which come against unranked teams.

No. 3 Oklahoma lost at unranked Colorado 27-24.

No. 4 Florida lost at home to unranked Auburn 20-17.

No. 5 West Virginia lost in Tampa to No. 18 South Florida 21-13 (Friday night).

No. 7 Texas lost at home to unranked Kansas State 41-24.

No. 10 Rutgers lost at home to unranked Maryland 34-24.

Prior to yesterday, this was the last time there have been five Top 10 losses in a single weekend. As you might recall, 2007 was one of the dead-nuts craziest seasons in college football history. Like, drunk uncle crazy. It is the only time in the modern era that the eventual national champion would end up with two losses. That would be LSU, who would go into the Sugar Bowl matchup with once-beaten Ohio State and take down the Buckeyes 38-24. So this day's carnage was just par for the course in this crazy season of action.

2- November 17, 1984

Five Top 10 teams lost, including four of which came against unranked teams.

No. 1 Nebraska lost at home to No. 6 Oklahoma 17-7.

No. 2 South Carolina lost in Annapolis to unranked Navy 38-21.

No. 7 USC lost at unranked UCLA 29-10.

No. 9 LSU lost at unranked Mississippi State 16-14.

No. 10 (UPI) TCU lost at home to No. 10 (AP) Texas 44-23.

One of the main reasons this loss-fest is so high on the list is because it was a heartbreaking weekend for many reasons. Particularly for the long-suffering fans of Carolina and TCU. The Gamecocks really blew it, having known that top-ranked Nebraska had lost earlier in the day and opened the door for them to take over the top spot. But the fire-ant defense just didn't show up against the Midshipmen, for some reason. And TCU had won just 10 games in the previous 15 seasons, but after an 8-1 start under the infectiously enthusiastic Jim Wacker, the Longhorns showed the Frogs no quarter. But what was the biggest reason this was the most heartbreaking weekend for all college football fans? Because THIS was the weekend that allowed a weak-sister BYU team to ascend to No. 1 and win the "national title."

.

1- November 9, 1974

All five Top 10 teams lost to unranked teams in the second weekend of the last month of the season.

No. 1 Ohio State lost at unranked Michigan State 16-13.

No. 4 Texas A&M lost at unranked SMU 18-14.

No. 6 Florida lost in Jacksonville against unranked Georgia 17-16.

No. 7 Penn State lost at unranked North Carolina State 17-12.

No. 10 Texas lost at unranked Baylor 34-24.

Michigan State did the biggest damage of all, having not had a seven-win season since 1966, before handing the Bucks their first regular season loss since a trip to East Lansing in 1972. OSU, who had an unbeaten streak of 19 games, ended up the season at No. 3. Looking back, this actually ended up being a weeding out of crybabies, because four of the above teams ended up the season outside the Top 10.

.

Honorable Mentions:

- November 3rd and 10th of 1990.

For the first time ever, four Top 10 teams lose in back-to-back weekends. That includes No. 1 Virginia's infamous loss to No. 16 Georgia Tech, who would go on to win the national title.

- October 27, 2002.

No. 3 Virginia Tech, No. 4 Notre Dame, No. 5 Georgia and No. 10 N.C. State all lost to unranked teams.

- November 20, 1993.

No. 1 Notre Dame lost to No. 15 Boston College on a last-play field goal. But also, No. 4 Miami lost to West Virginia and No 5 Ohio State lost to unranked Michigan 28-0.

- November 19, 1966.

The famous play-for-the-tie game where No. 1 Notre Dame and No. 2 Michigan State tied 10-10. But also because of bye-weeks and No. 6 Arkansas and No. 7 USC losing, that means No. 8 UCLA was the highest ranked team to win that day.
