UCLA Bruins vs Cal Golden Bears: Four Things To Watch

Kabam Field Memorial Stadium

This weekend at Kabam field in Berkeley, we will see a battle of the “Sons of California” as the UCLA Bruins faceoff against the California Golden Bears.

UCLA and Cal are both coming off of devastating home losses and are looking to get back on the winning track.

UCLA has lost the past two weeks, and has dropped out of the top 25 due to their recent poor play.  Cal has been a surprise this season, and looked to be taking the next step towards a possible bowl berth until they were derailed last weekend against a fiery Washington Huskies squad.

Both teams are in need of a strong performance if they are to have any chance at a bowl berth this season.

Here are four things to watch for on Saturday:

Who will stand out, Jared Goff or Brett Hundley?  Cal Sophomore Quarterback Jared Goff has been a pleasant surprise for Bears fans this season as he has progressed leaps and bounds over his freshman year performances and has led this young Cal squad to an early 4-2 record.  Goff leads the Bears with his strong arm and mobility, to having one of the top offensive systems in the PAC 12.  Goff will be challenged this weekend by the strong UCLA defensive secondary, and will need to be smart with his passing.  UCLA Quarterback Brett Hundley was an early season Heisman Watch candidate, but due to injuries and uneven play, he has dropped off the map.  Hundley is a solid professional prospect, but now there are doubts about his leadership and ability to stay healthy.  There is no doubt that Hundley is extremely athletic and talented as a dual threat Quarterback, but he is need of a strong performance against the Bears to get back into the national viewpoint.

Can Cal stop anyone on defense?  Cal has been highly effective on the offensive side of the ball, but they have had to play “backyard rules” games because their defense cannot stop anyone right now.  Cal has talent on the defensive side, but they have not been able to put a complete game together all season.  UCLA has the weapons to make it a long day for the Bears, and if the Bears are unable to stop Hundley, there will be a large number put up on the board by the explosive Bruins offense.

Will the Bruins strong linebackers be a factor?  The Bruins have arguably two of the most talented linebackers in college football with Sophomore Myles Jack and Senior Eric Kendricks.  However, due to the Cal offensive style with the “Air Raid” offense, this may neutralize these two talented linebackers and keep them on the sidelines.  Jack and Kendricks have great speed, but the Golden Bears run offensive sets with four receivers on the field most of the time.  This may land the two linebackers on the sidelines, and may give a slight edge to California.  The Bruins and Defensive Coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will have to figure out a way to involve his defensive standouts.

Who will be the difference makers?  UCLA has one of the most dynamic Running Backs in all of college football with Sophomore Paul Perkins.  The young back has been solid all season for the Bruins, and has carried the Bruins to victory on several occasions.  Perkins is getting better by the week and look for him to have an outstanding week against Cal’s young defense.  The difference maker for Cal could be Junior Bryce Treggs who has been an outstanding piece of the Bears offensive explosion.  Treggs is a legacy for Cal as his father was a standout in the early 90’s, and he has taken on a role similar to his father as a leader on the offensive side of the ball.  Treggs has great speed, and tremendous hands around the ball.  Treggs will be featured throughout the game.

By Patrick Johnston SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Neymar shrugged off a cold to score all four goals in a sumptuous display as five-times world champions Brazil routed an under-strength Japan 4-0 in a friendly on Tuesday to maintain Dunga's perfect start since returning as coach. The Brazilian skipper took his impressive tally to 40 goals in 58 matches after his strikes against the shabby Asian champions on a patchy National Stadium pitch deemed "far short of international standards" by Singapore's Football Association. ...

Against The Grain: Four Popular Picks You Should Stay Away From

Do you play Fantasy Football? If the answer is yes, this week is the most exciting opportunity in the history of the game. Win a MILLION DOLLARS playing Fantasy Football this week only! Go to www.FFChamps.com/million and get in on the action.

When the Sunday contest starts there will no doubt be some players who are big time favorites and are highly owned.  But should you follow the trend?  Here are four picks that you can let someone else have.

Pittsburgh Steeler Defense

There's no doubt that the Steelers are going to win this game.  It's at home and against one of the two worst teams in the NFL.  Unfortunately, fantasy defenses don't get points just for a win.  I know, the Jaguars have been awful.  Now they get to play the offensive minded Steelers.  If you need any more proof as to why the Steelers are going to win you can check out this article on their dominant offensive weapons:https://linkonym.appspot.com/?http://http://www.footballnation.com/content/against-the-grain-four-popular-picks-you-should-stay-away-from/31266/www.footballnation.com/content/draftkings-week-5-best-team-to-stack-pittsburgh-steelers/31172/ . But the Steelers also give up points, as evidenced by last week's last minute loss to Tampa Bay.  The Jaguars have some offensive weapons, they've just needed someone better to lead the charge and now they have him in Blake Bortles.  Bortles won't be able to do enough to win this game, but he will lead his team to points.  He was 29-37 last week against San Diego in his first full game and he should be more comfortable this week.

Jay Cutler

He won't be as popular at the Steelers defense, but the Panthers have shown over the past two weeks that they can be beat and most people will try to beat them through the air.  Cutler isn't a bad play, you can just do better for cheaper.  He'll throw an interception or two, but he'll get in the end zone a couple of times also.  The Bears will also be able to run it with Matt Forte so this will take away from some of Cutler's production.  What worries me the most about Cutler is the possibility of the Panthers being able to get to him.  If they can make him hurry his throws or worse, put him on his back a few times it will have an impact on the rest of his game.

Montee Ball

This guy should not be a popular pick, but it's amazing what happens to a player when his quarterback is Peyton Manning.  The matchup is terrible against a well rested Cardinals defense and Ball hasn't done anything against defenses he's faced so far and he's not going to do anything against this one.  Along with that, Manning is going to be throwing all day.  Ball will have close to the worst game he's had all season, but there will still be quite a few people that will pick him for their team.

Brandon Marshall

I am almost disagreeing with myself as I write this one.  A healthy Marshall is nearly unstoppable.  He's a big target and knows how to get open and can catch with one hand if he needs to.  And while even an unhealthy Marshall is still better than most, he's not worth what it will cost you to get him, especially when Alshon Jeffery is just a look away from Cutler and $500 less than Marshall.  The Bears will score through the air, but who knows if Marshall's ankle is ready.  It's very possible that this could be a monster game for Jeffery, Forte, and Bennett and Marshall could be used sparingly or as a decoy.  It's too much of a chance to take Marshall this week.

Four Players Under $4,000 Who Can Win You A Million

Do you play Fantasy Football? If the answer is yes, this week is the most exciting opportunity in the history of the game. Win a MILLION DOLLARS playing Fantasy Football this week only! Go to www.FFChamps.com/million and get in on the action.

An amazing opportunity is on the table this Sunday as ONE MILLION DOLLARS is up for grabs - www.FFChamps.com/million. Signup is easy and drafting your team is a snap. You will select a roster of 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, 1 FLEX, and 1 DST while remaining under the salary cap of $50,000. The same player can be rostered by multiple players, so no worries on Peyton Manning or someone you're really high on being off the table.

There are so many ways you can go in building your team. Like the expensive QB and his favorite target? Grab him! Prefer to load up on RBs? Make it happen. Have a few outside the box picks? Fit them under the 50k cap and you're golden.

Here are a few low-priced players that may help as you build the winning team:

  • WR Andrew Hawkins, $3,500. Hawkins has been a revelation this year, averaging 15.1 FPPG in this format. Look for a good amount of targets vs. the Titans.
  • WR Jordan Matthews, $3,500. Quiet last week after a solid 25.9 in Week 3. The rookie has game and could bounce back nicely against St. Louis.
  • RB Chris Ivory, $3,100. That's a cheap price for 14.1 FPPG. If the Jets can keep it close vs. SD, Ivory could make some noise.
  • TE Travis Kelce, $3,000. Did you watch MNF? See what he did there?

Someone is taking home ONE MILLION DOLLARS. It could be you - www.FFChamps.com/million.

The Four Most Undervalued Fantasy Football Players

Somehow, I resisted the urge of not writing the 10,000 article on fantasy football sleepers. Fantasy info is so prevalent these days it’s hard to find unique so called sleepers. Even if the sleeper has a breakout season, he will not be starting on many of the best fantasy teams. Ultimately the goal of fantasy football owner is to score a ton of points, to win games and ultimately to win a fantasy Championship. All of these four players will be drafted, and based on their ESPN staff ranking they will provide tremendous value for your fantasy teams. In this article I will predict the top undervalued player among quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and tight ends.

Jay Cutler, QB, Chicago Bears: Some people may say save the best for last. Not me, I’m coming out firing with my #1 undervalued player in all of fantasy football. Cutler somehow is currently ranked by ESPN as the number 15 quarterback and the 119th best player. This season, he has the potential to be a top three quarterback.  He will be an x factor for your fantasy teams. Consider last season the Chicago Bears started two quarterbacks Cutler and Josh McCown. They scored 291 points in standard leagues. Those 291 fantasy points would have ranked 3rd among all quarterbacks. Even after last year’s breakout offensive season, Cutler is going to finish as the number 15 quarterback? Does Cutler play in a great defensive division? No, The Minnesota Vikings were 31st against the pass, the Green Bay Packers were 24th, and the Detroit Lions were 23rd. Cutler gets six games against bottom 10 pass defenses. Did Cutler lose all of his weapons? No, this comparison below charts the productivity of receivers on two NFL teams. I took the top four remaining receivers from last season including two wide receivers, running back and tight end. Below are the catches, yards, touchdowns of two teams from last season.

Team A: 250 catches, 3141 receiving yards, 36 touchdowns

Team B:  328 catches, 4068 receiving yards, 27 touchdowns

Team A is the Denver Broncos and team B is the Chicago Bears. Team A included Demaryius Thomas, Wes Welker, Julius Thomas, and Montee Ball. Eric Decker and Knowshon Moreno weren’t included because they no longer play for the Broncos. Team B included Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, Martellus Bennett and Matt Forte. All four of Chicago top performer’s returned for this season. So now the Bears have potentially better weapons than the team that broke all kinds of offensive records last year. This season, the makings for a fantasy breakout are eminent. Chicago plays in a sorry defensive division. Cutler is in his prime and can make any throw. The Bears have four incredibly productive weapons and head Coach Marc Trestman is widely recognized as an offensive genius. Draft Cutler now and thank me later when he puts up monster fantasy numbers.

Stevan Ridley, RB, New England Patriots: Ridley is currently ranked by ESPN 68 overall and the 29th running back. Last season the New England Patriots were a team in transition. Injuries decimated their receivers and most importantly tight end Rob Gronkowski. The Patriots offense is so much better when Gronkowski is playing. Ridley in the past two seasons has seen a dramatic increase in production just by Gronkowski’s presence. Ridley averages 59 rushing yards, .38 tds per game and 8.82 fantasy points when Gronkowski is out. When Gronkowski plays, Ridley averages 74 rushing yards, .82 tds a game and 13.08 fantasy points. Worst case scenario, if Gronkowski doesn’t play a game, and Ridley averages those 8.82 points and plays 16 games, Ridley would finish as the #19 running back. If Gronkowski played all sixteen games and Ridley averages those 13.08 points for 16 games he would have finished as the #6 running back. That would put him ahead of rookie sensation Eddie Lacy and Adrian Peterson for fantasy points! Not bad for the #29 ranked running back. My final point is New England’s rush offense is much better than most people would realize. The Patriots were top 10 overall in rushing attempts, rushing yards and touchdowns in 2012 and 2013. No NFL team during these last two years have run for more touchdowns than New England. During that time Ridley has scored a team leading 19 rushing touchdowns. Those 19 rushing touchdowns are more than fantasy studs Jamaal Charles and Matt Forte have. Ridley is your best chance to get a top ten back at a great value.

Michael Crabtree, WR, San Francisco 49ers: Currently Crabtree is ranked 53 overall and 21st among receivers. This is arguably my most controversial selection. I’m sorry if I offend the legion of haters but Crabtree can ball. Last season it took him only six months to recover from a torn Achilles surgery. Crabtree only played in the team’s final five regular season games and their three playoff games. I know fantasy doubters would point out that he didn’t put up big fantasy numbers in 2013. But after watching several games on NFL Game Rewind and watching some highlights, I was impressed with Crabtree’s ability. He is a combination of receiver’s Anquan Boldin and Dez Bryant. Crabtree is one of the best route runners in the game. He can get open because of his agility and quick change of direction. He is a physical presence at 6’ 1” 214lbs. He can make plays in the middle of the field and also excels at making catches down the sideline. Crabtree is a competitor, he will never give up on a play. For example, last season in week 15 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Crabtree makes one of the best 4 yard touchdowns you will ever see. He makes a nice stutter step towards the corner of the end zone, reverses field to the back of end zone, stops on a dime, and goes back to the corner and just gets both feet down inches from out of bounds for the touchdown. You can check out the video on NFL.com to see how sweet this play was. In my film study this type of ability is apparent. In his last full season in 2012 Crabtree was the #14 wide receiver with 1105 receiving yards and 9 tds. The 49ers didn’t sign quarterback Colin Kaepernick to a six year contract worth up to 126 million for him only to handoff. Crabtree is still the most talented receiver on the team and Kaepernick’s favorite target. Even if Kaepernick’s passing improves slightly, then Crabtree is poised for big time fantasy production.

Jordan Reed, WR, Washington Redskins: Currently he is rated by ESPN number 146 overall and 10th among tight ends. His play on the field reminds me of a recent tight end from the University of Florida. Reed gives the Washington Redskins a big target that the team desperately needs. For a tight end, he has great speed, quickness and agility. He creates mismatches because linebackers don’t have the speed or quickness to keep up with him. Cornerbacks and safeties will have trouble out jumping Reed and bringing him down. Reed is just in his 2nd season, and was going to have a breakout rookie year before injuries ruined his season. Even though he played in only 9 games he had 499 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns. If Robert Griffin III returns to his rookie year form, Reed’s upside is comparable to last season’s Jordan Cameron and Julius Thomas. Reed has the athletic ability, he just needs to stay healthy. He is a tremendous value right now. You can draft him in round 12 or 13 and potentially get top five tight end production from him.
