Ace In The Hole: Ace Sanders Returns To Jaguars Roster

Hopefully the Jaguars will have an ace on their roster when they face the Pittsburg Steelers on Sunday.

The Jaguars have announced that Ace Sanders has had his suspension lifted by the NFL and will resume play on Sunday after being out of action the first four weeks of the season.

Sanders, a second year player and fourth round draft pick last season out of South Carolina, violated the league’s Substance Abuse Policy. Sanders missed the majority of the preseason before the suspension to deal with the issue and other personal issues and was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list by the team prior to his suspension.

Sanders was eligible and did play in the team’s final preseason game of the offseason.

“I’m very excited,” Sanders said as the Jaguars (0-4) prepared to play host to the Steelers (2-2) at Everbank Field Sunday at 1 p.m. “I just want to come in and get back into the flow of things. I really just want to see where that takes us as a team, as a teammate, and go from there.

“It’s nothing really too big that they put on me, just to come back and get in the swing of things.”

Sanders on Monday was cleared to participate in all team-related activities. He had been allowed to attend meetings and be around the team, but could not play or practice the past four weeks.

Sanders on Wednesday is expected to practice with the team for the first time since the final week of the preseason, when he practiced and played in the team’s final preseason game.

“He has been in meetings and in the playbook and asking questions the whole time,” Jaguars wide receiver Cecil Shorts III said. “So, he has been involved. … I feel like he’s more mature. I think this kind of opened his eyes a little and he learned from his mistakes. I’m excited to see him grow as a person off the field.”

With Shorts III expected to be out with a hamstring injury, and with wide receiver Marqise Lee on Wednesday being ruled out for Sunday also with a hamstring injury, the Jaguars have four healthy wide receivers other than Sanders: rookies Allen Hurns and Allen Robinson, Mike Brown and Tavarres King.

“Ace will have to find a way to be ready to go,” Jaguars offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch said. “He’ll play some plays and we’re excited to get him back, obviously.”

Hurns and Robinson likely will start, with Sanders potentially playing as the third receiver.

“There will be some natural rust, and not only that, you have to feel the game a little,” Fisch said. “We have to remember Ace only played 15 games last year. He was a rookie player. This is his first game back, so there’s going to be some rust. We have to see what we can do to get him going early.”

SHORTS TO MISS GAME

According to Fox News, Coach Gus Bradley all but ruled Shorts out Monday, a day after the fourth-year pro tweaked a muscle near his left hamstring in a 33-14 loss at San Diego.

Shorts missed the first two games of the season with a strained left hamstring. He started the last two, catching seven passes for 60 yards and a touchdown.

But now he's back on the sidelines. Although Shorts led the Jaguars (0-4) in receiving the last two seasons, he has missed 13 games in four seasons because of various injuries.

Falcons Need Moore's Leadership, Make Roster Moves

William Moore may not be able to play football for the Atlanta Falcons because of his injury suffered in the loss to the Minnesota Vikings, but the defensive back is being counted on to lend a hand in the leadership of the secondary and the players brought in to help replace Moore and others on the injury list.

According to the Falcons website, the team made an announcement Tuesday that safety William Moore will miss significant time due to a shoulder injury. This was a jolt in more ways than one. Of course, he's proven productive during his six-year career, but in 2014, the defense was handed to him to lead.

With Sean Weatherspoon suffering a season-ending injury during OTAs, Moore took the reins and began to run with them. Now out for a minimum of eight weeks, Moore's presence and leadership will be a felt void in the defensive huddle.

Head coach Mike Smith spoke to Moore earlier Tuesday and impressed upon him how much the Falcons will still need to lean on him for help and guidance. Smith said he expects Moore to be present with the team every day during his recovery, in the film and meeting rooms, helping his teammates prepare for the games without him on the field.

"We're going to need his leadership, much like Sean," Smith said Tuesday. "Sean is with us in the meetings. We expect that William will do that, as well. He's designated to return, so he's a guy that's definitely going to be back before the season's over, so he's a guy that can help us win games."

Smith said second-year safety Kemal Ishmael will be the start in Moore's absence, and although Ishmael has played well in his limited time in 2014, Moore's presence off the field can be an asset to the young defensive player.

The team plays the Giants this week in New York. Atlanta lost to the Vikings while the Giants appeared to have found their offense last Thursday night against the Washington Redskins.

ROSTER MOVES MADE (ACCORDING TO ATLANTAFALCONS.COM)

The Atlanta Falcons today announced that they have placed center Joe Hawley and tackle Lamar Holmes on injured reserve and placed safety William Moore on injured reserve-designated to return. Atlanta signed safety Sean Baker, tackle Cameron Bradfield, and guard Harland Gunn to the active roster, in addition to signing safety Kimario McFadden and guard Adam Replogle to the practice squad.

Hawley, 6-3, 302 pounds, was selected by the Falcons in the fourth round (117th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. He has played in 57 games with 23 starts at both center and guard.

Holmes, 6-6, 333 pounds, was selected by the Falcons in the third round (91st overall) of the 2012 NFL Draft. He has played in 20 games with 17 starts at both left and right tackle.

Moore, 6-0, 221 pounds, was selected by the Falcons in the second round (55th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft. In four-plus seasons as a starter, Moore has amassed 421 tackles (281 solo) with 3.5 sacks, 14 interceptions, and eight interceptions.

Moore's designation means that he can return to the practice field after six weeks and then return to the active roster after eight weeks.

Baker, 6-0, 209 pounds, was originally signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a college free agent out of Ball State following the 2012 NFL Draft. He spent part of the 2013 season on the Falcons practice squad before being signed to the active roster for the season finale.

Bradfield, 6-4, 308 pounds, was originally signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars as a college free agent out of Grand Valley State following the 2011 NFL Draft. He has played in 41 games with 27 starts seeing action at both guard and tackle. Last season, Bradfield played in a career-high 15 games with 11 starts at left tackle.

Gunn, 6-2, 310 pounds, was originally signed by the Cowboys as a college free agent following the 2012 NFL Draft. He was signed by the Falcons in 2012 and played in three games as a reserve offensive guard during the 2013 season.

Player A vs. Player B: Filling That Final Fantasy Football Roster Spot

Do you play Fantasy Football? If the answer is yes, this week is the most exciting opportunity in the history of the game. Win a MILLION DOLLARS playing Fantasy Football this week only! Go to www.FFChamps.com/million and get in on the action.

Your roster is almost set, you feel like you have a solid team that can make some noise. If only you could decide on that final spot...

One single player can make or break your fantasy week. Did you choose Antonio Gates at $4,400 for 6 points last week? Or did you save a little salary and roll with Travis Kelce for $3,700 and 23.3? Did you think it was a good idea not to draft Steve Smith Sr. at $5,600 for 35.9? Perhaps you thought you were making the right move by taking James Jones for $5,100 and 14.3? Each week, seemingly simple decisions can have a huge impact on your ability to take down a big score.

This week, a shot at ONE MILLION DOLLARS -   www.FFChamps.com/million - is on the table. How can you cut through all the noise and make the choices to help you take it down? Follow these simple steps, save some time, and get your roster where you want it to be:

  • Opposing Matchup. How well or poorly does the opponent defend that particular position? Do they allow a bunch of points to that position or are they pretty stingy? Have they been playing well or preparing for the draft?
  • Player Performance. How well has he been been playing? This year? Last 3 Games? Is he poised for a breakout or a non-factor in the offense?
  • Targets and Touches. How big a part of the offense is he? Can I expect him to see the same workload? More or less?
  • Injuries. Any injury concerns for either player? Any teammates out or coming back that could impact their playing time?
  • Over/under. Does either game project to be high-scoring? If yes on one - will Player A be a big part of that? Or will he not see much action later in the game? If yes on Player A and Player B - who receives the bigger workload - i.e. targets and touches?
  • Game line. Will this be a close game? Is Player A's team in risk of being blown out? Could Player B spend a lot of time grinding clock if they're up big?
  • Salary. For the price I'm paying, who offers more potential? Can Player A really be worth $500 more than Player B? If I go with the lower-priced player, can I improve my roster elsewhere? If equal in price - who should have the bigger workload this week?
  • Weather. Any implications I should be worried about? Is Player A playing in a dome? Will Player B suffer from the elements with projected winds of 25 mph?
  • Gut. When you can answer all of the above questions and you're still torn, go with your gut. Could be right, could be wrong but you will feel a lot better at the end of the day when the player your gut told you to take busts out for two TDs and he's on your roster.

This game can be as hard or as simple as we make it. Trust your instincts, seek out the sources and information you trust while filtering out the noise, and put together the best possible team at or under the $50,000 Salary Cap. This week, someone is taking home ONE MILLION DOLLARS!

WATCH: Jurgen Klinsmann breaks down USMNT’s January roster (VIDEO)

After naming his 26-man squad for the January training camp, Jurgen Klinsmann had let us delve deeper into his thought process behind the selections.
Klinsmann has put a real mixture together, as 10 players involved in the USMNT World Cup qualifying campaign are joined by nine uncapped MLSers.
So, what’s the thinking behind that?
“For us it’s a huge chance to see some players that we haven’t seen closely,” Klinsmann said. “There are other players that we’ve always had on the list but we want to reevaluate them and obviously some of the guys that are always part of the inner-circle of the senior national team.”
(MORE: MLS youngsters, plus Mike Magee, called up as USMNT January roster announced)
Klinsmann also revealed that he’s delighted to take 23 of his squad down to Brazil later this month, to test out the USA’s hotel and training facilities ahead of the World Cup this summer.
“After the first week we will go down to Brazil, down to Sao Paolo for two weeks to test out our facility down there,” Klinsmann revealed. “To train at FC Sao Paolo were we will train during the World Cup and stay at the hotel where we will stay, it will connect ourselves with Brazil. To be able to do that in June, that’s a tremendous advantage for us.”
