The Firing of Head Coach Rex Ryan Will Happen At Any Moment Now

Rex Ryan tenure as the head coach of the New York Jets is coming to an end, and it might not take till the end of the season for his exit. Ryan's walking papers has been earned since the 2012 NFL season. That was the year he was suppose to get fired with former general manager Mike Tannenbaum, but his job was saved luckily.

Give credit to Rex Ryan for his two consecutive AFC Championship appearances in his first two seasons with the Jets. Ever since then Ryan has been a shell of himself, and hasn't put the best product out on the field week-to-week.

The New York Jets are 1-7, and just look pathetic. They have a history of quarterback issues since Rex Ryan came on board. Now with the benching of second year player Geno Smith, Michael Vick will get his chance to show and prove that he can still be formidable in this league.

It's just too little to late though, because the New York Jets have a less than 15% chance of making the playoffs this season. Head coach Ryan is considered to be a sideshow of a leader. But we really have to think about it, Ryan doesn't belong being a head coach in the first place. He's a defensive coordinator in the NFL, and that's all. Ryan is a great one at that, but he's no leader and he's proving that for the past couple of years.

When he leaves he should take Geno Smith and his average offense with him, because the New York Jets need a new face, better talent, and a improved in-game scheme. Right now, Ryan is sitting comfortably at the helm, because he knows that his time is running out. Rex Ryan is a smart guy, he's collecting checks while consistently losing.

Once the New York Jets fire Ryan and move in a different direction, you'll see some positive changes moving forward. All the blame isn't just on Rex Ryan and his coaching staff, because he can't go out on the field and produce, it's up to the players to do that.

Let's look at general manager John Idzik, who I believe should follow Rex Ryan out the door. Idzik has done a terrible job as manager. He seems to not like spending money on talent, and his drafting stinks. The Jets won't win with Rex Ryan or John Idzik, it's that plain and simple.

What Happens Now For the Florida Gators?

A wise man and sports writer who now works for the four-letter network told me once that the head coach who replaces a legend is not the one who will inherit success. It is the coach who replaces the coach who replaces the legend that finds success and a winning record.

The Florida Gators program and the Gator Nation hope that is the recipe that awaits them after this season.

While Will Muschamp has not been fired and will be evaluated at the end of the season by Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley, there is nothing to do but make the final cut and count the losses.

Unless …

No one here in Florida has spoken about this, but what if the Gators turn it around starting this week?

It may sound ridiculous, and a prayer that will never happen, but what if? Could the Gators start out the rest of the season with a win against Georgia and play out the string, beating the Dawgs, Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Eastern Kentucky and then possibly beating FSU (stranger things have happened)?

There would be joy in Gainesville that the Gators finished 8-3 after a disastrous 4-8 record last year. And if that does happen, what happens to Muschamp?

There has been so much minutiae on campus associated with the team, but not with the field of play. Much of it centers on a change at the head coaching positon, but what does that mean for the remainder of the staff – especially offensive coordinator Kurt Roper and the much maligned quarterback, Jeff Driskel.

This week, speculation was put to rest when Muschamp named Harris his starter against Georgia – one week early in preparation for the game. It was the smartest move he could have made all season. That alone could be the biggest play of the Florida-Georgia game.

But there is more as well. The coaching decision still lingers and new names continue to pop up in newspapers, on radio, through the media and of course, the Gator Nation.

In a report by the Star-Ledger in New Jersey, there is some speculation the front runner for the job is Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. The former Oregon head man would be ideal for the Gator fans who are used to seeing Steve Spurrier and Urban Meyer sling the ball around the field.

Spurrier’s name has also been thrown around as well. The Ol’ Ball Coach coming home to finish what he started would be the story of the century in Gator Land.

Dan Mullen appears to be the popular choice of fans and some media types. But Foley (according to sources) is not willing to hire someone from the Urban Meyer tenure on campus and to be honest, until this season, the Mississippi State program has been a solid 8-5 program at best.

So all of this is going on and the biggest game of the Gators schedule is upon us again. The off week has allowed the team to get some more work in with a new man behind center. But the reality is there is still a lot of football to play, a lot of decisions to be made and a lot of good things “could” still happen. Realistically, they probably won’t – but it’s nice to dream.

And while this is all going on, the college football season is forgotten in a sense since we are more worried about seeing what happens after Florida’s season than we are during its season.

The 10 Biggest S.O.B.'s In The NFL Right Now

10.  DT Ray McDonald - San Francisco 49ers

Ray McDonald was arrested on August 30th, 2014 on charges of domestic violence.  As of today, the case has yet to go to trial and is in the hands of the district attorney's office.  As a result, no actions have been taken by the NFL or the San Francisco 49ers.  However, due to the nature of this arrest, and the potential results that could be handed down, I have included Ray McDonald in the list, but rank him the lowest until a legal ruling has been decided.

9.   WR Josh Gordon - Cleveland Browns

Josh Gordon quickly developed into the sure handed receiver the Cleveland Browns drafted him to become during the 2012 NFL Supplemental Draft.  During the off-season, Gordon tested positive again for marijuana again, which is his second violation of the leagues' substance abuse policy.  Since he was already suspended last season for the same infraction, the NFL originally suspended Gordon for the entire 2014 season, but his suspension was later reduced to 10 games by the league.

Cleveland has gotten off to a terrific start this season behind the relaible arm of Brian Hoyer.  When taking into consideration the additions the Browns made this off-season, and how well the team has played, you can't help but wonder how good the Browns might be right now, had Gordon not been suspended again for drug usage.

8.  LB Aldon Smith - San Francisco 49ers

Aldon Smith is highly regarded as one of the top defensive players on the San Francisco 49ers' roster.  He led the 49ers and tied for 5th overall in the league with 14.0 sacks during his rookie season.  He returned to lead the 49ers again with 19.5 sacks during his sophomore season, good enough for second overall in the league behind J.J. Watt (20.5).

Smith ran into trouble during the 2013 season, missing 5 games while he checked into rehab for alchoholism.  Smith finished tied as the team's leading sacker with 8.5 sacks during his 11 games played in last season.

Unfortunately for the 49ers, Aldon Smith's off the field troubles continued during the off-season, when Smith was suspended by the NFL for 5 games due to violating the league's conduct policy, and 4 games for violating the leagues' drug policy.  As a result, the 49ers defense has struggled this season without their top pass rusher on defense.  San Francisco has only produced 5 sacks so far (3 by Justin Smith) through five games, averaging only one sack per game.

7.  WR Brandon Marshall - Chicago Bears

Following an on the field incident while with the Miami Dolphins, Brandon Marshall was traded to the Chicago Bears.  As a result, the Dolphins added former Pittsburgh Steelers' veteran receiver Mike Wallace, who has performed well, while Marshall has continued his successful career becoming Jay Cutler's target of choice down field.

Brandon Marshall has had his share of on and off the field altercations during his NFL career.  His records dating back to 2004 would be too long to list in this article, but consists of numberous domestic violence reports and arrests.  In 2012, he was diagnosed with Borderline-Personality, a mental health condition in which a person has long-term patterns of unstable or turbulent emotions. These inner experiences often result in impulsive actions and chaotic relationships with other people.

While Marshall doesn't deserve to be suspended for charges and actions over two years old, he clearly has a history of troublesome behavior both on and off the field.

6.  LB Daryl Washington - Arizona Cardinals

Daryl Washington tested positive again for marijuana during the off-season, and as a result was suspended for the entire 2014 season by the NFL.  Washington could also face further league discipline from the NFL before all is sid and done, resulting from him being found guilty of assault during the off-season, from an arrest that took place on May 4th, of 2013.

Washington has been a key part of Arizona's success during the past four seasons, and has been one of the Cardinals' top defeders during his tenure in Arizona.  Last season, Washington followed up his breakout year in 2012 with 75 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 picks, and 11 pass deflections.  Those numbers have been missed this season, and like Josh Gordon (Browns) listed above, you can't help but wonder how good the Cardinals would be right now if he hadn't been suspended.

5.  RB Jonathan Dwyer - Arizona Cardinals

Jonathan Dwyer was arrested on a domestic violence charge on September 17th, 2014 from an altercation that took place back in July of this year.  Arizona immediately deactivated Dwyer, who remains on the Cardinals roster until a legal ruling is decided in court.

Dwyer entered this season as the primary backup to running back Andre Ellington, but he saw limited action during the first two weeks of the season, before the arrest and deactivation took place.  With Ellington healthy and playing well, the loss of Dwyer should be of little consequence to the Cardinals this season.

4.  S Will Hill - Baltimore Ravens

Will Hill was signed by the Baltimore Ravens to give their secondary a big lift at the safety position this season.  Unfortunately for the Ravens, before the season began, Hill tested positive for performance enhancement drugs, and was suspended for 6 weeks as a result.  There was specualtion his suspension would be reduced, but the reduction never took place.

As a New York Giant last season, Hill was effective in run support and pass coverages.  The Ravens had planned on having Hill start opposite of Matt Elam.  Hill is nearing the end of his suspension, and while the Ravens have played well without him, they will certainly be expecting more production from their secondary when he returns.

3.  DE Greg Hardy - Carolina Panthers

Pro-Bowl defensive lineman Greg Hardy was originally arrested on May 13th, 2014 on charges of domestic violence.  Hardy was originally found guilty of domestic violence, and communication threats in July.  Despite the ruling, it went overlooked by the Carolina Panthers until the fiaso with Adrian Peterson took place.  Following the Peterson incident, the Panthers' and Hardy agreed to have Hardy placed on the Commisioner's exempt list until his appeal case is decided by a jury.  In actuality, he's on paid suspention, as the appeal case likely wont take place until sometime in 2015 due to backcases.

Hardy's deactivation for the remaining 15 games of this season has already had a cripilling effect on the Panthers' defense.  Hardy is their premier pass rusher, leading the team in sacks during both of the past two seasons, with 11.0 sacks in 2012, and 15.0 sacks in 2013.

The Panthers have received a lift from defensive end Mario Addison, who has 4 sacks already this season, but they can't lose a top tier pass rusher without it effecting wins and losses.  Right now the Panthers are barely a .500 team, after finishing last season 12-4 and winning the NFC South.

2.  RB Adrian Peterson - Minnesota Vikings

Adrian Peterson was indicted in September on a felony charge for injury to a child (child abuse).  The charge stems from an accusation that Peterson had disciplined his child using a switch (wooden stick or rod).  After Peterson turned himself in, the Vikings quickly deactivated him until his legal issues are resolved.

Peterson was placed on the Commisoner's exempt list, which means Peterson, like Greg Hardy, will continue to get paid his weekly profits from games until a legal verdict is reached.  Unfortunately for the Minnesota Vikings, Peterson recently admitted to smoking marijuana prior to a court drug test, so it's very likely his bond will be revoked and another warrant for his arrest will be issued.

Adrian Peterson is one of the games most historic running backs in recent memory, and his loss has not helped the Vikings' quest to return to post-season play.  Expectations were higher this season in Minnesota, after the Vikings drafting young quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, but without Peterson on the field, the team is struggling to get out of last place in the NFC North.  There have been rumors floating around that Peterson has played his last game for the Vikings, if so, the Vikings might need to completely rebuild their existing offense.

1.  Ray Rice - Free Agent

Ray Rice avoided prosecution after knocking out his wife in an elevator during the off-season.  After a video of the altercation was made available to the public by the media, the Baltimore Ravens immediately distanced themselves from the situation and Rice himself, by terminating Rice's contract and releasing him.

The NFL followed up his release from the Ravens by suspending him indefinetely, or banning him, if you will, from the league.  As a result, the Ravens lost their premier rusher, which should have resulted in less offensive production this season.  However, running back Justin Forsett has made the most of this opportunity, and has quickly established himself as the top rusher in the Ravens' offense.

After veiwing the video, if there is one player that clearly deserves to never play for another NFL team, it's Ray Rice!  It would be a shame if the NFL were to ever reactivate Rice, what kind of message would that send?

Adrian Peterson

Atlanta Falcons

Atlanta is using four Running Backs in some type of rotation this season and while averaging 121.3 rushing yards a game, a running back like Peterson would give them a running game that defenses would have to focus on.  Atlanta can air it out with the best of them, but down the stretch you need a strong running game to make that play-off push.  Peterson would single handedly change the Falcons from play-off contender to the favorite to unseat Seattle as NFC Champions.

Carolina Panthers

The NFC South is wide open for the taking with 2-2 being good enough for first place at the moment.  In the off-season, Carolina was criticized for not addressing their passing game.  However, Carolina is averaging 280.3 passing yards a game and Kelvin Benjamin has been spectacular.  On the flip side, their rushing game has been very, very bad averaging 72.3 rushing yards a game.  On top of that Carolina has had to deal with injuries to their top four running threats; DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, Mike Tolbert and Cam Newton.  Adding Peterson is a no-brainer; he is durable and could carry the load for the team.  Carolina has already shown that it is willing to pay more than one Running Back so the contract would not be an issue.  Most importantly, adding Peterson would take some pressure off of Cam Newton and give him more time in the pocket to pass the ball, take fewer hits, and heal up from his injuries.

San Diego Chargers

The Chargers haven’t had much luck with the Running Back position this season.  Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead have both missed time with injuries and Donald Brown only hit 100 yards this week, for the season.  The Chargers came into Week 3 averaging only 78.7 yards per game, and with 42 rushing yards in Week 4 that number did not improve.  Philip Rivers had some great years with LaDainian Tomlinson, so he knows what the addition of someone like Peterson could do for his team.  San Diego is playing very well and the addition of Peterson could help them not only challenge the Broncos for the AFC West, but make them a real threat to win it all.

Denver Broncos

While we are talking about Denver, Peyton Manning could use a workhorse like Peterson to accompany him in the backfield.  Monte Ball hasn’t played poorly this season, but Manning’s window for Super Bowls is closing and having Peterson would cause defenses even more fits than Denver already does today.  Denver is only averaging 75.3 rushing yards a game and if that continues, it would mean that they would be heavily relying on Manning’s arm to carry them through the season and into the play-offs yet again.  Denver has improved its defense, if it improved its running game, this team could be completely unstoppable.

New England Patriots

The Patriots rushing attack has been lackluster this season, averaging only 105 rushing yards per game.  Shane Vereen has been effective at times catching passes out of the backfield and Stevan Ridley has yet to show that he can be consistent enough to be the premiere back.  Peterson would give the Patriots an every down back that they haven’t had since Corey Dillon.  Adding Peterson would be a great addition to help prolong Brady’s career and more importantly, help ignite a struggling Patriots’ offense.

'Your job now is to stand by our new manager' Fergies last act of genius as Manchester United boss

'Your job now is to stand by our new manager' Fergies last act of genius as Manchester United boss
As Sir Alex Ferguson took to the Old Trafford turf last May to deliver his farewell speech, not many would have guessed that he may have been about to deliver his final act of genius as Manchester United manager.
After a few minutes of soaking up some rapturous applause, thanking players and staff and wishing all the best to the ill Darren Fletcher and fellow retiree Paul Scholes, Ferguson uttered his final request to his adoring faithful: ‘Your job now is to stand by our new manager’.
The new manager he was referring to was of course, David Moyes and by encouraging the Old Trafford crowd to back their new leader to the hilt Ferguson may just have bought him some valuable time.
For at this stage of the season, if Moyes had been employed by the ruthless owners of either Chelsea or Manchester City, one would have to conclude that he would almost certainly have received his P45 by now.
While most Manchester United supporters did not expect Moyes to slip into Fergie’s throne without any discomfort, most would not have expected to be languishing in 7th position in the Premier League table in January, five points adrift of the fourth Champion’s League spot.
Yet after last week’s last-gasp F.A. Cup defeat to Swansea and the midweek humbling by Sunderland in the Capital One Cup, fans were still showing their support for the manager. The question now is, exactly how far will the patience of the Manchester United faithful stretch?
How many more defeats will it take before they are calling for Moyes’ head? How many more weeks of mid-table obscurity will they be able to handle before pushing for his exit?
If Moyes can manage to lead a springtime charge up the table and clinch Champion’s League qualification then he should be able to breathe a sigh of relief and look forward to a second season at the Old Trafford.
Another saving grace would be a decent run in this season’s edition of Europe’s premier competition. With Olympiakos as opponents in February’s round of 16, United will fancy their chances of at least making the quarter-finals and, with a bit of luck, go even further.
All this would certainly have to be seen as a decent return for the manager’s first season in charge. However, with last week’s conquerors Swansea returning to Old Trafford in the league this Sunday and a trip to Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea looming the following week, Moyes may find himself with his back firmly up against the wall, and with Sir Alex Ferguson to thank for ensuring he’s made it this far.
