The NFL's Biggest Surprises Of Week 9: Dolphins Are Contenders

The Steelers In The Race For First Place In Their Division

Just a half of a game behind the Bengals, the Steelers are in second place in the AFC North. At 3-3 after Week 6, the Steelers were considered the worst in their division, but they have come back, outscoring their past three opponents 124-80. The Bengals and Browns have struggled to carve out wins against seemingly inferior teams, while the last time that the Ravens have beaten a team with a record of .500 or better was in Week 3. Considering the standings, this division still looks to be up for grabs, but the Steelers are the hottest of them all right now.

The Chargers Were Shut Down At Home By The Dolphins

Ryan Tannehill put up the best numbers of his career, leading the Dolphins to a 37-0 victory over the now 5-4 Chargers. The Chargers are now on a three-game losing streak, which may be detrimental to their playoff run. The Dolphins on the other hand, are 5-3 and have put up three excellent performances in the row. After this game, Miami is now in close competition with the Patriots (7-2) and the Bills (5-3) for the AFC East title.

The Rams Upset The 49ers In Santa Clara

This game may be remembered by the controversial call at the end, but what one of the most notable occurances is that the Rams have held star running back Frank Gore to just 87 yards off of 30 carries in their two games this year. They also improved tremendously in coverage, as Colin Kaepernick threw for 106 yards and two touchdowns less than he had in their Week 6 match-up. The Rams may still buried in the NFC West race, though, as their offense cannot be relied on to put up points.

Peyton Manning And The Broncos' Offense Was Held To Just 21 Points

The Patriots' defense has been solid as of recently, even with key losses, but each of the Patriots' past three opponents put up more points than the Broncos. The Bills, Jets, and Bears are all ranked in the bottom half of the league in points per game, but they put up 22, 25, and 23 points against the Patriots, respectively. The Broncos, who have averaged more than 30 points per game, put up just 21, while Peyton Manning threw the ball a season-high 57 times.

The Raiders Are One Of The League's Most Competitive Teams

Calling the Raiders one of the most competitive teams in the NFL may be a bit of a stretch, but look at what they have done against great teams. Of their eight losses, they have lost four by one possession or less, and three of those games came against contenders. The Patriots, Seahawks, and Chargers are all very talented teams, but they beat the Raiders just by a combined 16 points. A touchdown for the Raiders would have won games against the Seahawks and the Chargers, while it would have tied things up against the Patriots. What is more impressive is that they were able to hold their own in Seattle and Foxborough, two of the hardest fields to play in as the away team.

Are the Detroit Lions For Real Or Just Pretenders?

JohnsonThe Detroit Lions are fresh off a last-second, comeback victory against the Atlanta Falcons, which gives them a record of 6-2 and a one game lead at the top of their division. So why would I be saying that they don't belong there? An argument I look to tackle in the next few paragraphs.

Lets start with the game against the Falcons I just mentioned. On paper it looks good, the Lions came back from 21-0 down at halftime with a 48-yard game winning field goal from Matt Prater to secure the 22-21 win at Wembley stadium. However if you watched the game, I was lucky enough to be at Wembley, you could easily see that this was a performance that left a lot to be desired.

Firstly the absence of Reggie Bush for the Detroit run game means that the Lions are 31st in the league in yards per game, only the Oakland Raiders are worse at running the ball. Which means right now the Lions are one of the most one-dimentional offences in the league, relying on the arm of Matthew Stafford and their ninth ranked passing game.

Which is an issue, highlighted in the Falcons game. Stafford made several, actually, a lot of terrible throws. Not even on difficult passes, check down routes, screens, there were balls thrown at receivers' feet, throws miles overhead and some just completely off target. Don't get me wrong, Stafford has one of the best arms in the league, his decision making on the other hand is questionable. Also without Calvin Johnson on the field Stafford refused to make any deep throws, his strength. The only one I can remember seeing was the touchdown to Golden Tate, apart from that it was a lot of small gains here and there.

The next thing that concerns me is the amount of injuries the Lions have going down the stretch. They have coped pretty well so far, but losing all three of your tight ends has got to catch up with you soon right? Calvin Johnson's health will also be telling of how far Detroit go into the post-season. He is without doubt the best receiver in the league and without him, all due respect to Tate, the Lions' passing game is incredibly average.

The schedule isn't the easiest either, so far the Lions have handled business in the divisional clashes, but with two games against the Bears and Packers remaining with a depleted squad, it will be hard to keep that momentum going. Not to mention games at both Arizona and New England.

I would love the Lions to prove me wrong, I've got a lot of respect for them, Calvin Johnson is one of my favourite players in the league and their defensive line is one of the most disgustingly good around. But in my opinion Detroit will struggle from here, the injuries and schedule will slow them down. I still think they will get nine or ten wins, but a playoff run? I think they just aren't complete enough of a team to contend with the NFC heavyweights.

The 6-1 Cowboys Are NOT Who You Think They Are!

The Dallas Cowboys are not for real. Don’t be fooled by their 6-1 record, fancy stadium, or the fact that half their offense could look really good in underwear commercials. This team is a fake. A fraud. A phony. Their 6-1 record is a scam. Paying attention yet?

Sure, Dallas has won their last six games. It is a strong streak. The last time the Cowboys won six in a row was 2007. They actually won 12 out of their first 13 that season, but stumbled down the stretch losing two of their last three and their only playoff game. This team seems even better.

When we take a closer look at the Cowboys though, there are four glaring flaws. Four things that are going to prove their weakness and that will cause their ultimate downfall.

4. Schedule: The Cowboys have won six games against teams that are a combined 15-24. Big freaking deal! Their BIG win at Seattle seems less and less impressive as the Seahawks implode. They don’t have a SINGLE win against a team with a winning record. And three of their wins have been by a score or less including a win in overtime at “home” against the Texans.

Looking ahead, the Cowboys face some actual challenges. Their remaining slate includes two games against the Eagles, games at home against the Cardinals and Colts, and a road game at the Bears. All five of these games will present very strong challenges, and games at Washington and the Giants always end up being close because of a great division match-up. Don’t be surprised if the Boys limp in to the playoffs as a wildcard at 10-6.

3. Demarco Murray: WHAT?! Isn’t he the top option for league MVP right now? Isn’t he the reason the Cowboys are 6-1? Yes and yes. And he will also lead to their downfall. Murray is touching the ball at an incredible pace. He is on pace to have 478 touches on the year. This is the same Demarco Murray that has missed multiple games every year of his career. I just don’t believe that he will survive much longer. And when that happens, inconsistent Tony Romo has to take the reins. The Cowboys become one dimensional and teams find the much easier to stop.

2. Run defense: Sure, their run defense and defense in general looks a lot better than it did last year, at least on the stat sheet. But when we look closer there are two things that stick out. First is that the Cowboys are still giving up nearly 5.0 yards per carry to opposing teams. They have had their mix of very good (Lynch, Gore, Foster) backs to play against and very bad (Sankey, Stacy, Williams) backs. But if a team can average half of a first down every time they run the ball, that isn’t good.

Second, because teams often played from behind they had to abandon the run. The Titans and Saints only carried the ball 13 times; the Seahawks, who dominate the run game, only rushed 18 times. Teams who actually run the ball have found success doing so.

1.Time of possession: Let’s tie this one to Demarco Murray. One of the only reasons that the Cowboys are doing well is because they allow Murray to control the clock. Over the 360 minutes they have played in six winning contests, they controlled the ball for a ridiculous 211 minutes! That is nearly 18% more time than their opponents. Once Murray goes down, it all changes.

Think that I should have written an article praising Demarco Murray? Maybe you’re right. I do tie their downfall to an event that may never happen (and the fact they haven’t beaten anyone of substance). Tell me about it in the comments below.

New York Giants: Are Moore and Kennard the Real Deal?

In the 2013 NFL draft, The New York Giants selected Damontre Moore in the 3rd round out of Texas A & M. Initially, many viewed the selection as a steal as Moore was projected by many experts to go in the 1st round.  In his rookie season, Moore was a non-contributed mostly due to injuries and lack of experience. Fast forwarding to the 2014 season, Moore was healthier and ready to be a major contributor for the Giants defensive unit. Unfortunately, Moore has not been the player the Giants had envision as he only has 12 tackles and 2 sacks through the first 6 games.

With the departure of Justin Tuck and the lack of production thus far from Jason Pierre Paul, the Giants desperately need a player with Moore’s abilities to make an impact on the pass rush. Although the verdict is still out on Moore, he must develop sooner and become one of the main cogs in the Giants DL if this team has any expectations of making the playoffs. Moore can’t do this alone, as it would take a team effort on both sides of the ball. However; during the Giants last two Super Bowl Championships; one of the main reasons for their success was their ability to get to opposing quarterbacks. Creating constant pressure and causing the opposition to turn the ball over at crucial times.

In the 2014 draft, the Giants selected Devon Kennard out of USC in the 5th round.  Perhaps Kennard’s stock fell due to the fact that he played four different positions (DE, MLB, SSLB,WSLB) at USC and never really established himself as a bona fide NFL prospect.  After a solid pre-season, Kennard has been hampered with nagging injuries and has not been able to fully contribute thus far.  However, all the ingredients are in place for Kennard to develop into a solid defender and pass rusher for the Giants.

There is still time for Moore and Kennard to be that type of impact players the Giants are envisioning and the Giants could have something very special in the foreseeable future. This team needs to get back to what made them champions in the first place and that is a power running game to go along with ferocious  pass rush. With Moore and Kennard, it’s a good start.

NFL Awards Week 6 (The 'Boys are Back Edition)

Howdy ya'll and welcome to the week six edition of the NFL awards, where we're not afraid to let our Texas accents to play this week.

Because who knows when we're ever going to get the chance to use it again, especially when we're using it due to the Cowboys' success on the field.

Also this week...it's Christmastime in Cleveland, Aaron Rodgers tries to out-Marino Marino in Miami, and the Buffalo Bills never should have ticked off Tom Brady.

And no one else should have, either.

And I'm sure we'll have some other stuff, too, but if we gave it away now, where would the fun be in that?

Let's get started.

Toasts for Dixie: Ole Miss & MSU are the Real Deal

Nobody loves college football like the state of Mississippi does right now.  Whether you like it or not, Ole Miss and Mississippi State are the real deal and are in the hunt for the four-team College Football Playoff this year.

Mississippi State man-handled the Auburn Tigers, 38-23, Saturday while Ole Miss beat Texas A&M, 35-20, on the road.  The score doesn’t truly show how dominant Ole Miss was on both sides of the ball.

Ole Miss’s defense, known as the “landsharks”, truly is the scariest defense in the nation right now.  They took down an Aggie offence easily on their own turf.

Aggies quarterback Kenny Hill threw 2 interceptions, one resulting in a 75-yard touchdown by safety Cody Prewitt.   Hill was also sacked twice and fumbled on the first play of the fourth quarter, which Keith Lewis returned for a touchdown to make it 35-7. Poor Kenny Hill just couldn’t do anything and the Aggies ground game was shut down to just 54 yards.

Anyone still questioning Ole Miss’s legitimacy is a fool.  You need to get over what hate/jealously you have (unless you’re Mississippi State) for Mississippi and realize they are the real deal this year.

Ole Miss still has really tuff games coming up with two of them being road games at LSU and at Arkansas.  The egg-bowl will most likely be more exciting than the Iron-bowl this season.

The only thing I can really see other teams banking on is to take advantage of quarterback Bo Wallace’s mistakes.  He is prone to making key mistakes but if he is mistake-free for the rest of the season they could win every game this season.

Fun fact for fans and upcoming opponents, Ole Miss’s starting defense has scored just as many points as they have given up.  Sit on that one for a while if you think Ole Miss isn’t that good. The state of Mississippi is coming for ya, and both teams have proven they are the best in the nation right now.

2014 Temple Owls Season Update: Are The Owls Ready To Fly Yet?

In the world of college football the usual stories are all about the power five conferences and teams that have won big in the past. I always like to show the “little guys” some love every once in a while because after all they are out there playing 12 games a year as well despite not being recognized on a national stage.

One of those teams that have a historically bad past is the Temple Owls from the American Athletic Conference. The Owls went 2-10 last year and saw a slippage in their recent run of success from 2009-2011. The Owls in those three seasons won 26 games and even won a bowl game in 2011 against Wyoming.

That bowl win was the first for Temple since the 1979 Garden State Bowl. So, obviously it has not been the best of times for Temple, but they are in an area where the college football world revolves around Penn State.

Temple is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the media coverage goes to mainly professional sports teams. The Owls always have to battle Big Ten powers for big time players and it usually doesn’t turn out well for the Owls in those recruiting battles.

The Owls currently sit at 3-1, including a 1-0 start in the American Athletic Conference. The Owls only need three more wins to become bowl eligible in 2014. So, can they get the job done? Let’s take a look at their schedule.

The Owls have home games against Tulsa, East Carolina, Memphis and Cincinnati. If the Owls can manage a 2-2 record in these four games their chances of making a bowl are pretty good.

The Owls have Houston, UCF, Penn State and Tulane on the road the remainder of this season. I feel their best shot to win in this stretch is obviously against Houston or Tulane.

Temple is 0-37 all-time against Penn State since 1943, so obviously it would take a historic win, literally, to get a win against the Nittany Lions.

The road will be tough, but one thing is for sure the Temple Owls are beginning to get back to a respectable level like they were several seasons ago. Temple has a proud legacy and it continues to grow on the football field. The Owls are just one of many teams that don’t get the national attention big power teams do, but for once I wanted to show the little guy some national recognition and love.

How Serious of A Playoff and Super Bowl Contender Are The Cowboys?

The Dallas Cowboys, otherwise known as America’s team, have been a surprise feel good story so far this 2014 NFL season. The Cowboys entered the 2014 season with a quarterback in Tony Romo coming off back surgery and a defense that was historically bad in 2013.

After the first four weeks of the season all of that has changed and the Cowboys appear to be a serious contender not only in the NFC East, but in the entire NFL. It is still very early in the grand scheme of things, but the early return on this Cowboys’ team has to be very positive.

The Cowboys opened the 2014 season with a home loss against the San Francisco 49ers 28-17. It appeared that the Cowboys were headed for another disappointing season, while the 49ers were about to contend for another Super Bowl. The exact opposite ended up happening and now that has us talking about the Cowboys as a possible playoff contender.

The Cowboys, since that loss, have defeated the Titans and Rams on the road and followed that up with an impressive blowout victory of the Saints 38-17. The Saints were expected to be contenders in a competitive NFC South, but that has been anything but the case.

So, that raises the question are the Cowboys for real or has their great start been a result of a soft schedule so far? I feel it is a combination of both. I would have said a soft schedule before the Saints game, but after the beat down the Cowboys put on the Saints in all fashions of the game I believe the Cowboys are a good team.

The key to the early success for Dallas has been the running game led by DeMarco Murray. Murray has accounted for 534 total yards rushing and has accounted for at least 100 yards rushing in all four games to this point.

The main thing Murray has done is taken pressure off of Romo. Romo in the past several years has had no running game to support him and he was expected to throw the ball around in order for the Cowboys to win. Now, Murray and an improved offensive line have the running game clicking which has got the Cowboys off to a 3-1 start.

The Cowboys at the quarter pole mark are 3-1 as we just mentioned, but can they keep it up and make the playoffs this season? Let’s take a look at their schedule and try to figure that question out.

The Cowboys have key road games against Seattle and Chicago. If the Cowboys were able to somehow beat Seahawks then the Cowboys would be serious contenders not only for a playoff bid, but a possible Super Bowl run. I feel a successful mark in these two games would be going 1-1.

The next and biggest question is how Dallas will do against their rivals in the NFC East. The Cowboys have not played a game against an NFC East opponent to this point in the season.

In fact, the Cowboys won’t play an NFC East opponent until week seven of the season when they face the New York Giants in Arlington, Texas. If the Cowboys take advantage of a weak NFC East this year then they could easily win ten or 11 games and make a serious playoff run.

It’s still very early, but so far the Cowboy faithful have to be thrilled with what they have witnessed. The running game is clicking, Romo appears to be healthy and the defense is much improved this year.

The Cowboys are well on their way to a playoff spot and we all know once you get into the playoffs anything can happen. It has been a long time since the Cowboys have won a Super Bowl, but this year could be a step in the right direction.

Romo has to stay healthy and the defense must continue their improved ways in 2014. I still believe the Philadelphia Eagles are the favorites to win the NFC East this season, but if there is a team that could knock them off it’s the Dallas Cowboys.

The remaining 12 games for Dallas will be watched very closely by people all across the country. The Cowboys are America’s team and so far America has a team to be proud of in 2014.
